Dorset / Pubs in Weymouth 1960s pictures
« on: Saturday 08 November 14 14:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,
I run the pub history site, and have received a number of mainly 1960s Devenish pubs to add to the pages. Two I am currently unsure about are the Railway Station Hotel, and also  the 'older' picture I have added as the Kings Arms. There will be about 30 pictures to add in total, and many are named. I just don't recognise some of these when comparing with some of the modern pictures. All suggestions welcome.

ps I will add a quick Weymouth 1911 census pub crawl later.

Sorry, I seem to have lost the detail and email address. I think I emailed them some time ago with little luck,

Essex / Re: Essex [& London & Kent] Pubs

Six years on, and still running the same sites - but under different names. There are now about 50,000+ pages and 10,000+ images.
The site pubshistory.com aka all the other names, has a sister site pubhistory.co.uk which starts to add some of the Northern areas, e.g. Manchester.

Enjoy,

Suffolk / Mary Stearne born 1830 in Elmsett
« on: Friday 22 March 13 19:32 GMT (UK)  »
Dear all,
I have been contacted by a lady in France who has a photograph of a Mary Stearne, born about 1830 in Elmsett. This is from a family diary with additional information recorded as follows:
Mary the daughter of Thomas and Mary Stearn was born on the 20th of December 1830 about five minutes before nine o’clcock in the morning --
Sarah daughter of the same parents was born on the 26th of January 1833 about five minutes before ten o’clock at night –
A stillborn female child of the same parents born April 10th 1838 about 10 o’clock in the morning.
The above named child Sarah Prudence Stearn breathed her last June 12th 1841about 4 o’clock in the morning at the age of nine years and about 4 months after a fortnights illness chiefly in the head and affected the brain.
July 29th 1843 Thomas Stearn father of the above children breathed his last about 10 minutes past 3 o’clock on Saturday afternoon after an affliction of five months borne I hope I may say with patience and resignation to the will of Heaven and in hope of a blessed resurrection. Aged 53 years.
                                                                                                                                                           Mary Stearn

Is this of any interest to any Stearne researchers. I have yet to research her, but she appears to be a housekeeper in 1871 at the Hall, Elmsett with her uncle Patrick, farmer.
She contacted me after reading Ray Longs database details.

Dumfriesshire / Re: McQueen in Scotland & Somerset

This looks excellent. I think this is George Pool at Swordwell? Their son Thomas McQueen Pool marries a Barbara Irving; and they have a daughter Sheilagh Barbara Eileen Pool in 1905 at Saltcoat. She marries in 1931 to Leonard Hollyman.
Grace (nee McQueen) Pool is a widow running an hotel in Cumberland in 1891; and back in Abercorn by 1901.
The link to the McQueens of London was a red herring, although I did research them.
I will post a little more later after looking at your tree on Ancestry.
Many thanks for this detail.

Oxfordshire / Re: Straith, Oxfordshire

Hi Trish,
Sadly this is the wrong Richard. This Richard is listed in 1871 as born Tylehurst, whilst the correct Richard is living in St Pancras by 1851 and married to a Martha. There are also a couple of parish births on line at ancestry, which help to clarify address of Willsted court.
Not a problem, as I have decided to add Whitchurch pubs to my site along the way!

Thanks,
I have since done a search on other Ilsley families around this time; and a probable place of birth is Streatley, in Berkshire. I don't know the area, although I cover the pub history for both areas.
http://pubshistory.com/. Streatley is on the borders of both counties, I believe.

Many thanks for a quick response.

Merry Christmas to all researchers.

Oxfordshire / Straith, Oxfordshire
« on: Tuesday 25 December 12 22:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,
I am helping out a family member who has  a Richard Ilsley born about 1828 in a place called Straith, Oxfordshire. This detail is from the 1851 census entry where he is married to Martha. The census entry is very clearly written.
Does anyone have any idea where this [Straith] could be a reference to. A search on google shows little suggestion, as does the Oxford genuki site.

Thanks
Kevan
