On his death cert 4-6-1978 it states date & place of birth 24th October 1890, Wakefield Yorks.

Are you sure?  That DOB is for the son of William and Sarah mentioned earlier.  Is this the death cert you have?

John Henry JACQUES
26 Oct. 1899

Apr 1978
Apr-May-Jun

Basford, Nottinghamshire

Looking at the index scan I think it should be 24 Oct. but it does look like 1899.  Is that incorrect?

There is a John JAQUES registered in Barnsley in 1895 ( indexed as JAGUES on GRO - mother's name WOOLHOUSE), have you discounted that one ?

I have ordered the certificate

What do you expect to find by seeing that certificate?  The father's name is wrong, and it isn't the right quarter.

I have gone with his parents as Jonathan and Sarah Jane but no-one in the family (that's left) knows.

That one is this birth registration.

JAQUES, JOHN
Mother's maiden surname: THORNTON
GRO Reference: 1889  D Quarter in KEIGHLEY  Volume 09A  Page 165

He married Mary WOOD at Bingley in 1917, father Jonathan a reed and heald maker.

On his marriage cert 12 April 1917, he states he is 25yrs old, and his wife Lilian Street is listed as 30yrs old but 3 years later on the 1921 census she is 36 and he is 29yrs 8mths?

If the dates of birth in 1939 are correct then these ages are as well.  In April 1917 John was aged 25, turning 26 later that year.  Lilian was actually 31, about to turn 32 so close enough when you are older than your groom.  On 19 June 1921 John was aged 29, about to turn 30, and Lilian had just turned 36.

The first letter is a W not an M.  The previous page has a William.  I think WALLER or WALTER, he doesn't always make a mark to cross his T.

One of the witnesses is Louis Mansfield
Could be a brother .

It is Louis FULLAGAR, not Louis MANSFIELD.

Civil registration of births, deaths and marriages did not start in NSW until 1856 so before that you are relying on finding a church record of baptism, marriage or burial.  Not all children were baptised and not all church records have survived or have been made available to the Registry for indexing.

Edited to add[/color]:  There is the possibility that Ivan wasn't the real father, and Elsie had an affair with a Forrest while Ivan was in New York? Ivan might not have even known about the baby?

That is what I thought was going on all along  ;D  I think that Harold Snr is the father of Harold Jnr.

There is correspondence in Richard's military record about birth records and baptismal records for his children.

Richard was born 29 Sep 1902.  They had to supply a baptism certificate for him separately from the others but it is unclear whether those others were birth or baptism certs.

The marriage and death were both in the registration district of Southampton.

HEATH, LUCY  EMMA
No mother's maiden surname
GRO Reference: 1869  J Quarter in SOUTH STONEHAM  Volume 02C  Page 53

Fanny HEATH and Lucy are with Fanny's father in South Stoneham in 1871.  I can't see any registered NORTHAM/HEATH births after 1877.
