Kirkcudbrightshire / Re: Girthon and Anwoth Free Church

Hi Solway
I already have all this info. As I said this is my GGGrandfather and that is where my tail ends.
A search for William around his birth date in Kirkcudbright (Girthon) shows only one child born. I am trying to prove if this is him or not.
Thanks anyway.

Thanks Solway & Emma
Mary is the fourth child of Alexander Galloway b. 1772 and Mary McNish died 1843.
1st child William b. 04/05/1799 at Girthon.
2nd child George b. 05/06/1801 at Girthon.
3rd child Alexander b. 13/08/1804 at Girthon.
5th Child Elizabeth b. 15/04/1809 at Girthon.

It is William I am trying to trace as I can find no mention of him after his birth.
I have found Alexanders (1772) Will and all the above are mentioned except William.

I am trying to prove whether he died in childhood or left home to make his way as a weaver in Mouswald Dumfrieshire (my great great Grandfather) who came from Kirkcudbright.

The fact that Mary is burried at Girthon is interesting.

Kirkcudbrightshire / Girthon and Anwoth Free Church

Can anyone tell me where I might find records for The Girthon and Anwoth Free Church of Scotland in Gatehouse. This was a breakaway from Girthon Parish Church.
I am searching for the Galloway family who were members of Girthon Parish Church but may have followed the minister in 1843 to form the Free Church.
I can find no records for the family at Girthon after this date.

The Common Room / Scottish Banns & Marriage Certs Help!
« on: Sunday 24 January 10 12:34 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help explain the Scottish banns and marriage certificates for c1841.
I was looking for a marriage extract in the OPRs and found 2 entries for the same couple.
The first I think is the proclamation of banns for the bride read in her parish (Bothkennar) on 19/02/1841 and the second on 01/03/1841 in Dunipace states "John Leget in the parish and Agnes McKay in the parish of Bothkennar were proclaimed in order to marriage and no objections offered they got a certificate thereof"
Is this the reading of the bans or is this the closest I will get to a marriage certificate?

Hi Wullie
I hear what you are saying. I live in the Midlands of England and cannot easily access the records in Scotland.

Hi Kirsty
I have traced the life of William born in 1803 in Applegarth and he died in Lockmaben, so not the one I am lookig for.
William b. 1799 was the first born to Alexander and Mary. They had 5 children i think.

Hi Gadget

I agree I am clutching at straws.

William the weaver in Mouswald was not married but had one son called John b.14/04/1843.
Extract from Mouswald OPR reads "John Galloway natural son of William Galloway and Janet McVitie in Mouswald village born 14th April 1843. John Broatch was sponsor both parents being under Church censure"
Janet McVitie was a married neighbour in Mouswald.
Janets husband seems to have left the area when John arrived, John was brought up by Janet. William lived nearby according to censuses.

I don't think there is any help here!
Cristian names don't follow the usual sequence but if William fell out with his father then that could explain this. Or possibly William had something to hide. Or maybe I am missing the obvious. Who knows?

As for Culreoch it is little more than a farm an a couple of cottages these days and is about 6 miles or so north of Gatehouse in the Fleet valley.

Further to above, I have Death extract for Mary McNish which reads as follows
Oct 8th 1843 At Gatehouse Mary McNish widow of the late Alexander Galloway farmer Lag & Culreoch age 68 (Girthon)

Hi All
Firstly a big thanks to Mosstrooper, Gadget and KistyG for the information, much of which I have, but has taken me months to find. You are all so much better than I am at finding the links.
Please let me explain why I am interested in this family:- I can trace my paternal line directly to William Galloway a weaver who died in Mouswald in 1870. His death certificate says he was 75 and his parents were unknown. The informant was the inspector of poor.
The 1861 Census shows him in Mouswald as a lodger age 56 born in Kirkcudbright.
The 1851 Census shows him in Mouswald as a lodger age 50 born in Kirkcudbright.
The 1841 Census shows him in Mouswald as a lodger age 45
A search on Scotland’s people for a William Galloway born in Kirkcudbrightshire over a range of possible dates only shows only one, born to Alexander Galloway and Mary McNish.
I know it’s a longshot! As I cannot prove this link I decided to try to disprove it by seeing if William died in infancy or childhood. Hence my original posting.
The Galloways of Culreoch were an extended family of farmers, hence the confusion over names. Alexander did have a brother called William and both there wills are on S/P. add to this William has two wills.
They were a wealthy lot and in Alexanders will there is no mention of his son William and he dissatisfied with his son Alexanders conduct.
Is it possible that William fell out with his father and left home at an early age to move to Mouswald and become a weaver?
But where are all the Galloways of Girthon parish buried?
Any help or suggestions would be welcome.
