London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Re: Help in finding someone

Hi Anne

I have only just come back on to this site, so only just saw your query.  Apologies.  James William Skiplorne, born 1876, died 1939, was my great grandfather.  His oldest son was also James William, born 1896, died 1968.  I remember this one, my great uncle Jimmy, who was a policeman and lived in Chingford, Essex.  We used to go there for tea a lot.  Happy memories.

Would love to know how you are connected.

Best wishes
Kathy

Hi Jennifer

I can't thank you enough for all the hard work you've put in for me.  I must appreciate it.  I have formatted a document with all the ones relevant to me.  It's now not looking like I can find the direct link to Donald John Cockell.  But I will keep on researching until I find or link or discover that we are so far removed........

When I find out, I'll let you know - I think you deserve to know more than me now  ;D

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Help in finding Kate Cockell
« on: Wednesday 13 January 10 20:57 GMT (UK)  »
I know I definitely made this connection about a year ago after much searching on Ancestry, but blowed if I can find it now after many hours over the last couple of days.  I'm trying to find a Kate Cockell (not sure if this was her proper name or shortened).

Kate Cockell is the mother of Donald John Cockell (found that out on Wikipedia) who was the Light Heavyweight boxing champion in the early 1950s.    Don was born in 1928 and died in 1983.  He married a Patricia Mary and they had two sons.

I have Edmund James Cockell (b. 1868) married Susannah Ada Skiplorne (b.1870) in 1895.  Susannah died in 1896, poor girl after only one year of marriage.  Perhaps Susannah died giving birth to Kate?

As I say, I did find the connection once, so know there's a link.  All the above events took place in London.

Can anyone help please?

Thanks in advance

Kathy

Hi Ken

Yes, he is the father of JWA Skiplorne and the photos are on Ancestry.  I had seen the Army record of JWA.  Do you know the youngest age men could enlist?  It will be very interesting, not for me obviously but for everyone, to see the Kew online papers on Findmypast.

I tried looking for barracks in Newington, but nothing came up.

Many thanks for all your help

Kathy

Many thanks everyone!

Ken, his name is James William Skiplorne, born 1876 in Walworth, London and died 1939 in Camberwell, London.  I can find the pattern work on other uniforms, but not the cross-over plait braiding - so far.

Niksmum, thanks so much for posting it on the Armed Forces Board.

Yes it is great, even though I tend to read with a notebook alongside me!  When you find famous ancestors like these you also discover a mountain of books!  Alison Weir's 'Isabella', Ian Mortimer's 'Edward III', Alison Weir's 'Kathryn' are other recent reads of mine and I'm related to all of them!

My apologies too for the thread hijack but it isn't every day you meet a new cousin!

Jill

I actually have the book Katherine, by Anya Seton, which is about Katherine de Roet - my 22nd great grandmother. I descend from her and John of Gaunt via John Beaufort, whose daughter Joan married King James I of Scotland - the line goes into one of my Houghton branches and eventually into the Willis family. I think Katherine and John probably have hundreds of thousands of descendants all over the world by now.

Stephen :)

'Katherine' is one of my all time favourite books!

I have Don Cockell, the British Light Heavyweight Boxing Champion in the 1950s in my tree.

Not in my tree, but David Jones (aka Bowie) lived in the same road as me, as a child  ::)

Hi

I'm new on here, having been recommended to me by someone on the Family Tree Forum.

I'm hoping that someone can help with information about this uniform please.  I believe it to be a hussar uniform, but can't seem to find the regiment (or date) after quite a bit of research.

Here it is:
