Thank you, I have tried Newbury (found someone else who I wasn't expecting to find)! but I haven't tried Maidenhead yet, I will add it to the list of places to check.  The main problem with this travelling family is they were often baptised in a different place to where they were actually born!

Many thank for the link - I think I'm quite likely to find something of interest in these documents.

Berkshire / Berkshire Overseers - what are they?
« on: Wednesday 24 February 10 14:50 GMT (UK)  »
Excuse my ignorance, but can anyone please tell me what the Berkshire Overseers were?  I think they were something to do with Poor Relief.

I have some ancestors on my tree who were very poor, so I'm wondering if I can find anything out about them from these records, that is if they name people individually.

Many thanks

Monique

I managed to look through the Boxford registers this week, but no sign of the elusive Williams, I did find the entry for Amos Blackman that you mentioned though - and that of his daughter Clementine, who married James Williams, so it wasn't a wasted effort!  Thanks again for your help, I will keep looking!

Hi Patrish,

Had a quick look and found the following:

George KILL baptised 8 March 1801
Parents: Samuel & Sarah
Parish: Soberton

Mary Henrietta FLOWER baptised 26 May 1793
Parents: Mary
Parish: Cheriton
Baseborn

Cheriton is not far from Beauworth.

Hope this helps.

Berkshire / Re: Dothan Place, Newbury

Thanks for those links, it is hard to imagine Jack Street looking like that now - it looked so long!  I find pictures like these help bring your family tree to life, you can imagine a bit more about how they lived.  With all the changes in town it is easy to forget how things once looked.    :)

Hi Paul,

My 3x great grandparents lived at 1 Dothan Place in 1881, but by 1891 they had moved to Gordon Terrace, also in Newbury.  They were William Giles and Sarah Ann Alder.  Looks like we have no connection, but it's quite likely that our ancestors were neighbours!

Best of luck with your research
