I also have ancestors who lived there, do you know anything about the history of the place?  Some of them lived in Jack Street which I know was quite a grim place, but I have found no info on Dothan Place.  Quite a few also lived down Northcroft Lane.

Thanks for your reply.

We believe that his father died before they got married.  I know that in the 1800's the father wouldn't be mentioned at the baptism - but I didn't know if things would have changed by the 1920's??

I would still like to verify where and when the baptism took place, as we have a photo of the event.

Hi, I have the birth certificate for (*)  I am wondering if the baptism record will show the name of his father, as the birth certificate does not.

Thank you in advance for any help that anyone is able to give me on this.

Hi, that's the same family, but I can't go back any further - it's very frustrating as I have gone back further with all my other names!!

I may just have to accept that this is as far back as I am going to get, and concentrate on finding out more about their fascinating lifestyle!

Thank you very much for taking the time to look  :)

Oxfordshire / WILLIAMS travelling in Oxfordshire

Hi, I am tracing a gypsy family who travelled around Berkshire and Oxfordshire.  I am looking for the baptisms of the following:

Elisha WILLIAMS b1834 Wheatley
Richard WILLIAMS b1851 Henley-on-Thames

At the top of the tree is a James WILLIAMS all I know that he was born c1802-06 in Wokingham, Berkshire but he may well have been baptised in Oxfordshire, I have checked all obvious records in Berkshire.

I know it's a long shot, they didn't always baptise their children where they were born, but if anyone has easy access to these records, I would be very grateful for any help.

The Common Room / Re: Found Anyone Famous

Not terribly famous, but very interesting:

Andrew Freemantle (1768-1838) my 5x Great Grandfather and a first class cricketer, who played for Hambledon and England during his career.

George Samways (1895-1996) a ghost-writer for the Greyfriars comics (Billy Bunter etc.), writing over 100 of the stories.  He also had a book of poetry and an autobiography  (Road To Greyfriars) published.

Yet to find any royal connections - I'm sure there must be one somewhere! :D

Thanks for your replies, I know the family stayed on many commons (Woodhay Common, Sonning Common, Bucklebury Common etc).  I think I will have to try and find an old map as suggested.

It could be Compton, I will certainly put it on my list of places to search.

Best Wishes
