Thanks dettori28 - good points. At this stage I don't think there are any relatives on my grandfather's side.

I have had contact with someone in Peoria where my great uncle registered for the draft and he has filled in details about the draft and my gt uncle's travels together with a lot of dates and details from Ancestry (USA).

Hi Lisa

My father has only scant recollection of this uncle - but he sounds fascinating.
I will take a look at the Penn Railroad link - thanks.  I suppose Ray D Smith was his boss at Penn RR.
Re the draft card - if he was native born, then it would appear that he was American and may not be my great uncle born in Hampshire England.

It always amazes me where genealogy takes you!

Dear All

Thanks for your help and getting this posted in USA Lookup requests.

Parents names and Netley Terrace are correct according to my information. Maurice William JAMES Buxey, known as James, may have been put down as next of kin as Edmund and Ellen his parents died aged mid 40s.
However the note about James of Beverly Green (Yorkshire?) as his father doesn't appear correct and Halifax boat departure I am not familiar with unless he was travelling.   Also not sure what Penn RR Works is.
merjones, would it be possible to give me a link where I can find out a bit more about the WW1 Draft Registration and Thomas' war record. Army?

Once again many thanks,

Not familiar with USA records, archives &c.  Can anyone fill in any details between birth & death of Thomas Buxey born Fareham, Hampshire, England .  It is thought that he left England in approx. 1924 to go to USA and some talk of his being a jazz trumpeter and possible involvement in Prohibition.
Birth Date: 18 Jan 1886
Death Date: May 1965
Social Security Number:  334-07-7748

I wish I had come across RootsChat.com much earlier AND known what sort or quiestions to pose and info to give.  It all seems to have been so easy for you.

Those family anecdotes passed down all seemed to say the each and every Viscount was bestowed an Order of the Bath with the last family member receiving a Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1820.  Dates (but not able to be verified) were:  Sir Mark Anthony Brone 9th Viscount Montague received 1797, Sir George Samuel Browne 8th Viscount Montague 1787 going back to the 1st Viscount Montague 1554.  Anyway, these dates were transcribed by another family member from A C Fox Davies's Complete Guide to Heraldry.  Will  now put that part of the family history away.  The only copy I was able to obtain in Australia dealt only with heraldry.  Oh well.

Interesting about the bankruptcy which was a VERY drawn out business.

With regard to the Jannaway land and the turnpike, I will look up that map of Soberton.  I wonder if it is near Boorley Green, as I was recently told that descendants 2 generations later were born in a turnpike house there.

Once again, your time time and information has meant a lot me., especially in terms of putting "flesh on the bones" of my ancestors.

Although, I am despairing that I may not be able to go back much further, it is lovely to have the will you found.

The vocation of Cheesemonger will be of great interest to my father, being a serious cheese lover himself!

I will also try and pursue the possible link to Corps of Royal Engineers and Anthony James Browne's involvement with Portchester Castle.

Once again many thanks.

I hadn't heard of the Jannaways until late last year and this is wonderful to have this information.

IF it is not too much trouble, would you be able to scan and email the obituary to me.

I will PM you if it is o.k.

Many thanks.

Thanks for your pointers.

I've no hard evidence, but although the title died out in about v.late 1700's the Order of the Bath (which went with the title?) was awarded to the Anthony James Browne b. Glasgow 1791 albeit downgraded to Companion of the Bath. The Last Viscount Browne was Sir Mark Anthony Browne who was a monk, but given dispensation to leave the monastery and marry - but left no issue.

Very grateful - thanks.

Valda

Thanks so much for all your effort.  A lot of this tallies with what I have been able to find or have had passed down to me.

I think in 1851 AJB was a Super or Superintendent of the CRC or CRE Department in Glasgow.   I would love to know what those initials stand for!  Corps Royal Engineers?? Was mentioned in one of the Palmerston Fort links, so I might follow that up.

AJB was born in Glasgow 1791, baptised in Portsmouth 3 mths later, then shows up in 1851 at Glasgow again.  Food for thought – Scottish research thoughts perhaps.

ACTION 1:  I’ll try looking for the 1791 AJB Scottish birth certificate, I think his parents were Anthony Browne & Elizabeth Campion. But even if I verify this I still won’t have any dates or addresses to search back further to link to those Viscount Brownes.  Any ideas?

Just as a by, AJB was married to Martha Jannaway in 1844 and the son John was born in 1840 (sometimes referred elsewhere as John Huskisson Jannaway).  The witnesses at the Soberton marriage were Anthony Browne, Merchant and Joseph Jannaway, Small Farmer.

So,... referring to the 1841 census, and Charles Anthony Brown 13 yrs old, not born Devon.
ACTION 2: I might try looking at a Glasgow birth for Charles Anthony Brown in 1828 to see who his mother was (i.e. AJB’s previous wife).

My real problem is even if I get the correct certificate; I don’t think I will have any dates or addresses to search further back.

Do you know of anything similar to FreeBMD in Scotland? Or a worthwhile site to subscribe to?

Once again, many thanks for your reply.
