Bedfordshire Resources & Offers / Offer: Cranfield Churchyard Lookups
« on: Sunday 01 April 07 19:19 BST (UK)  »
I have had so much help from people on these boards and I would like to give something back.
Hardly a look up offer but I do live next to Cranfield Church and would be happy to search for graves in the Churchyard or in the new cemetery opened in about 1990.
Please feel free to ask.

If you have a request, please start a NEW TOPIC on the Beds LOOKUP REQUESTS board or send me a personal message.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Alton
« on: Tuesday 27 March 07 21:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I'm a little curious as I have two families (Rodwell and Pearce) who both came from Great Missenden in Buckinghamshire and were living in Alton at the time of the 1901 census. Both are listed as woodworkers.
Was there a major building project underway at the time? Gordon Joseph Pearce died in Alton in 1908 so it wasn't like a temporary job.
Any ideas? Is Alton known for wooden goods?
Thanks

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / William Albert LAWTON b1900
« on: Thursday 08 March 07 12:34 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder whether anyone can help with this one!
William Albert Lawton was married to my Great Aunt Alice (nee Shirley) on 6th April 1921. According to the marriage certificate he was a hospital clerk residing at 3 Connaught Mews, London W2. He was also listed as an army pensioner. His father is shown as William Lawton (deceased) and also an army pensioner. This was a registry office marriage - St George, Hanover Square - probably for reasons in next paragraph!
They had a daughter Joan Alice Minnie Lawton born on 6th August 1921. The birth is registered in Edinburgh so I suspect Alice went to Edinburgh to give birth as that is where William came from.
I know nothing further about William and indeed never met him...he must have died relatively young - I was born in 1953. I do remember meeting his brother George who spoke with a Scottish accent. I can't recall ever meeting George's family (if he had one). However, someone seems to think that some of the family might have gone to Canada or Australia - a youngish couple came over in the mid or late 1960's and left there rucksack in my Aunt's loft after touring the UK. I think George might have lived in London and may also have had a military background (may have been POW during WW2)
Does anyone have any information which would allow me to explore this part of my family a little more thoroughly? I've posted this on the Scottish board too just in case anyone has Lawtons!
Thanks.

Looking for information on the above who was killed in an RAF bombing raid over Hamburg in 1944. He was married to Kathleen and they lived in Cheltenham at the time.
His father was Major Edward Charles Shirley who died in 1942 and is buried in Chorleywood Herts.
Any clues gratefully received.

Buckinghamshire / Verdon and Euan Pearce
« on: Friday 02 March 07 12:02 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for a Verdon Pearce, born in about 1872 at Hyde Heath, Great Missenden Buckinghamshire. Euan Pearce was born in about 1878 also in Hyde Heath. Their  parents were Daniel and Frances (aka Franny or Fanny) Pearce These two produced 6 children, one of whom Ernest Henry was my great grandfather.
Neither Verdon nor Euan were particularly common names so I thought these would be easy to trace.  Not so - both were living at hime at the time of the 1891 census but Verdon then seems to disappear - I can't find any record of his death and no mention in the 1901 census.
Euan (or Evan in the 1891 census) is still at home at the time of the 1901 census but thereafter disappears apart from a possible marriage in 1902 (can't confirm this) again no record of a death.
Does anyone know where they went? Has anyone come across these two in their own research?
Any information gratefully received.
Thank you
Ian
