Lanarkshire / Re: Illegitimacy on my timeline
« on: Wednesday 06 July 22 20:09 BST (UK)  »

My grandfather didn't sign any of the three certificates.    My grandmother signed them and added "Mother" below.    My grandfather collected copies of two of the certs from a different Registration Office.    They were separated by the time of the 2nd & third births.

I really do like the "Edit Relationship" tool and will be using that - I can use "Add Alternative father."      I haven't tried it yet though.

My tree is private at the moment.     Does anyone know what happens to it if I die (I am 79).     Does the whole tree become public so that anyone can see it?   That is what I would like to happen.     Or does Ancestry just pick up images here and there and offer them as hints to other trees?

     Rosinish,
You're right.    I have always had it at the back of my mind.     Those three have the wrong surname!!!

Reluctant to reveal names because I am trying to protect someone who married one of the illegitimate children and doesn't know the history of what happened.

Must explain something that might make it clearer.      The first three children were born between 1910 and 1915, the last being my father.    Then there was a gap and the 4th child was born 10 years later in 1925.  The last three children were not my grandfathers.

One Illegitimate birth has the true father as the middle name, with the surname being my grandfather.      The other two illegitimate births don't mention the real father, and my grandfather's surname is there instead.    They don't even mention that the babies are illegitimate, but my father knew the truth, because there were whispers about it between my grandfather & grandmother and my father and his two brothers, although young at the time, had big ears.

        Debra,
On just one of the three birth certificates in question, the name of the child has the culprit father's full name given like a middle name, so I see what you mean.

That particular certificate let the cat out of the bag!        There was the culprit father's name in black and white!

I think what my father actually wrote in his memoirs was that his father allowed my grandmother to treat the kid as though it was his.

         Pheno & brigidmac,
This is exactly the sort of information I was looking for, so thanks a million.

....There were six children.     The first three were my grandfathers, the second three were all fathered by this other man, whose name I know.    I have living descendants who don't know anything about him, as it has been top secret all this time.

I am satisfied with the information I already have on the tree for my grandfather & grandmother.      I have researched it thoroughly.

I just want to fit in the biological father as well.     I can do that now,

                                                        Thanks again!

It is Ancestry I am using.      I have been wondering what the standard way of doing this would be?   How would a first class tree maker do it?

Maybe all I can do is to make a note at the point of birth at the top of  the Timeline of each illegitimate child, saying: "True father was ... Joe Bloggs - see my Joe Bloggs tree."

So Joe Bloggs, the culprit, would have a tree of his own.

That seems reasonable.     I have seen huge, very thoroughly researched trees, where there seems to be a standard way of doing things.       About 10 years ago, I was in contact with someone in U.S.A., who was involved in a world wide Porteous tree.     She gathered information about Porteous people from all over the world.      It was a giant tree.

Lanarkshire / COMPLETED - Illegitimacy on my timeline
« on: Wednesday 06 July 22 09:09 BST (UK)  »
Grandmother had illegitimate children, back in the 1920's.      As she lived in a small village, her husband allowed the children to take his surname to avoid the awful scandal that would follow if the truth came out.   It was covered up each time.      It would have brought great shame on my grandmother otherwise.

My grandfather did move away from the village to find work in Glasgow but being a kindhearted man, he kept in touch with her.   Grandmother then moved to another village.

How could I work this on my Family Tree?    On my Family Tree, the children have my grandfather's name.       How can I include the real father?

I guess this problem happens all the time with folk who have taken a DNA test and find a skeleton in the cupboard.
