I am hoping to include some photos in a family history but with context i.e. connect them the particular generation. The photo is of the quayside of Waterford City, Ireland but I do not have a date. The ships look like they were Steamships and the gent with the top hat may suggest late Victorian or early Edwardian. Does the sailors uniform offer a clue?. My guess is about 1905 give or take 5 years. Can someone be more accurate

I have come to a halt in my research because the entries for this parish register, that exist, start in the 1660's. So does anyone out there know what happened to the earlier records?

Family History Beginners Board / Can Anyone work out this parish register entry?

Looking for someone to work out what is written following the names of the groom and bride (shown in Latin as Jacobi Lumley and brigadum Halloran) which in English money is James and Bridget. I'm hoping it states his occupation and where he lived.....I can but hope

Staffordshire / Eccleshall in Staffordshire Burial Records 1618 onwards
« on: Monday 07 August 17 10:35 BST (UK)  »
Hello

Does anyone have access to burial records for Eccleshall after 1618. I am trying to find a burial record for an Ann Pennyfather (maybe spelt Pennifather of Pennefather). She was a widow who I believe was living in nearby Croxton in 1622. This is the last record I can find for her but I believe she remained in this locality and died shortly after 1622.

I cannot find what has happened to the burial records for this parish after 1618.

Family History Beginners Board / How to interpret relationships e.g. what is cousin?
« on: Wednesday 19 July 17 14:45 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I suspect I may get a variety of answers to my question but here goes. I have an example of an ancestor taken from Burke's Peerage of a marriage circa 1680 where he married his cousin. My question is how do I interpret this. Should I assume they were first cousins or did for example 'cousin' include relatives who were further removed i.e. second or third cousins. Hope this makes sense.

Heraldry Crests and Coats of Arms / Assistance with two Family crests
« on: Sunday 14 May 17 15:28 BST (UK)  »
I need some guidance on family crests? It concerns two family crests for the related Pennyfather (or however the name is spelt) families. One of these is found in a book concerning the history of Tatenhill (close to Barton Under Needwood) the other is from a Visitation to London and is conferred to William Sheriff of London and references John Pennefather of Barton Under Needwood (attached). There appears to be a dispute in the families about their usage. In the one from the Tatenhill history, attached it states a John Pennifather issues a disclaimer. Now does that mean he (John Pennifather) will no longer use the crest or does it mean he is contesting who is using this particular family crest. Interestingly though the Tatenhill crest, showing Abraham Pennefather, is not found in the County of Staffordshire Visitation of 1663/4. So does William Dugdale, the then Norroy of Kings Arms revoke this crest that was being disclaimed? Is my understanding correct that the arms granted were retrospective back to the grandfather of the direct line then descendants of that line ownwards?

I need help in deciphering what is in the will. I don't necessarily need it verbatim as long as I have all the important detail, names dates relationships. Not sure if it is English or Latin or just handwriting that is very difficult to decipher.  It is also held on findmypast 1602 William Penifather at Barton-Under-Needwood.

Family History Beginners Board / Poulevarla - where is it?
« on: Wednesday 21 December 16 10:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I appreciate that place names change over the centuries and non more so than in Ireland were some are anglicised versions of gaelic names etc. I have tried listing parishes and townlands of Ireland to find this particular place, but no joy. The person I am researching is a John Pennyfather (or variant Pennefather) born about 1710 Ireland. Burke's peerage lists him as John Pennefather of Poulevarla. But I cannot find a place of this name in Ireland. Can anyone help - clear this up?. He is the only person in Burke's peerage where Poulevarla is mentioned.

I think there may be someone in the family who went to Ireland from England circa 1650? He had been living in England, specifically Calne, Wiltshire around this time but there is no trace after then. I suspect he joined the army and went to Ireland and stayed there. I believe it may have been Capt Sankey who commanded 5,000 troops in Calne around this time and he then became a major player in Cromwell's Irish Campaign. Where do I begin to look for records, if they exist, of people who joined the army at this time?
