Quaker Family History / Rotherham Quakers
« on: Wednesday 23 June 10 20:10 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Does anybody know if any Quaker records survive for the Rotherham area circa 1650-1680.
I know that there were Rotherham Quakers around that time who emigrated to the USA, I can't seem to find any records for them though.

Hi,

See also http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/source/1274wakefield-courtrolls.html
Wakefield Court Rolls 1274-1297. This has several mentions of the Copleys and does include some family relationships.

It's been a few years since I made the tree but I am guessing that since I was more interested in my line of Copleys I only followed the first Thoresby article and then added the rest at a later date.

It is mainly from the Thoresby Society books. I am not saying that it's right, it's just my attempt at it.

I have seen the bishops transcripts book at YAS, it is a handwritten book made by one of the Tolsons from loose sheets which were discovered in Kirkheaton church. It also has some Kirkheaton wills.

I have a transcript of the Kirkheaton bishops transcripts from 1600 to 1616 and I see that there seems to be only one George North and he was buried 19th March 1609.

I have Norths on both my parents sides of the family but I haven't got very far with them.

Is there a particular person or family who you are looking for in the Kirkheaton parish registers?
Do you know which part of Kirkheaton they lived in? That would narrow down which set of deeds you would need to look at.

I have some family interests in Kirkheaton and I found that the deeds, court rolls and wills are a good source of information in the absence of parish records.

Technical Help / Re: Creaky laptop
« on: Sunday 30 May 10 13:11 BST (UK)  »
My hinge was creaking, then one day it just broke :(
I had just thought that it was the plastic but under the plastic cover is a metal hinge, it was that which was creaking and eventually seized and broke.

I would think that to cure it you would have to remove the plastic cover and oil it with WD40 or similar.

Since yours is quite a new laptop it might be worth checking the warranty or taking it for repair just in case it goes the same way as mine because the hinges are very expensive. I haven't had mine replaced, it's just hanging on with the one hinge as it's an old laptop and not worth the expense.

I started at the photo archive and then tried the local history library. I hadn't thought of the Examiner though.
Their website isn't much use but I will give them a ring.

I see that there are a few people on here who also have ancestors from Cowcliffe.
I was wondering if anybody knows where I could find any photographs of Cowcliffe before all the new houses were built in the 1960's?
I am especially interested in North Cross Road where my grandfather John Edgar Starkey was born in 1890.

I have already tried Huddersfield library but they only have a few photographs of what I want.
