Nick,
Wheatroyd Lane is a place just off Kaye Lane in Almondbury, when I said that Kidroyd was an old route up into Almondbury, it goes from Kidroyd, up through Penny Spring woods to a place called Broken Cross on Kaye Lane. Wheatroyd is opposite Broken Cross.

Hi Nick,
I also think that Martha North and John Cockin are my ancestors through their daughter Sarah.
Like you I got bogged down because there were just too many possibile Marthas.

In case it's any help I can tell you a few of the places that I know of that the Norths lived.
Bank End farm, Dalton but right on the boundary with Almondbury

Quarry Hill, bottom of Almondbury,Somerset Road, Penistone Road area and on boundary with Kirkheaton

Cold Royd , Dalton but border with Kirkheaton

Almondbury Bank, Kidroyd, Moldgreen possibly same dwelling or very close to each other, on boundary Almondbury and Dalton which is Kirkheaton parish

The fact that I have found three separate North family connections shows how common the name is in my area.

Hi, I live quite close to Kidroyd, now just a few houses off the junction of Somerset Road and Longley Road. I believe that it was originally all the way across to Ravensknowle Road and was a main road from Dalton up to Almondbury.
I happen to have Norths on both my parents sides and I believe that they go back to about 1584 on Forest Road/Bank End Lane which is only a short distance from Kidroyd.

I have found a marriage on the Genuki site. It is from a transcription from the Wath upon Dearne marriages for 1750-1759.
For 17 March 1755 there is a marriage for a William Norman? to a Sarah Bagshaw.
Genuki do say that the transcriptions are prone to errors so I was thinking maybe Norman could be my Norburn (Norborn/Norbron).
Does anybody have access to the original film please to check it?

Thanks, Stuart

I agree that the old maps appear to show the hall near to the working mens club, now sadly gone, I spent many a night playing snooker in there.
However George Redmonds (RIP) the making of Huddersfield  and the Minters book Discovering old Huddersfield show the building over the road which also agrees with british listed buildings which says that the address is 175 to 179 Rawthorpe Lane.
Nether Hall was further on where the riding school is.

Rawthorpe Hall is one of the few remaining halls in our area. It is now divided into two houses and the timber framed building has been covered in stone.
If you go on google maps and look at the junction of Rawthorpe Lane and Foxlow Avenue you can see it.

I live in Huddersfield and so far as I know nobody actually died in any air raids in Huddersfield during WW2 so perhaps he was living somewhere else at the time.

Woodhouse Common or Moor is now Hyde Park and the university. Could this have been Leeds Common?
