I have a relative who kept a shop in East Reach or East St at this time called Emily Skinner. I would be really interested about any mention.

That's the same person. He escaped with a fine in 1876 I think. I have him down as b 1833 (28 at time of 1861 census) and lodging in East St in 1911 (listed as John but his occupation and proximity to his estranged family lead me to believe this is him. I am interested in your finding though. Can you help with gaol records please?

Somerset / Wilton Gaol

One of my ancestors was a fairly regular visitor to this establishment.
Job Skinner was sent down for 2 weeks (August  1865, assault) a month (September 1881 drunk and disorderly) 2 weeks with hard labour ( June 1888 drunk and disorderly).
Are there any records that would show his admission and discharge that may give me any more information about the old rogue? Is this too early for 'mugshots'?
I believe their is a history of the gaol but it is out of print and not available from local bookshops. does anyone have a copy or access to one?
The same individual was also listed as being in the workhouse at the time of the 1901 census. Again any further information would be greatly appreciated. Mr Skinner was a sawyer and I would also be interested to learn where he worked.
Thank you in anticipation.

Have you tried the National Newspaper Archives? You should find reports of the trial. I would look up but my subscripion has expired. You can pay £6 for 48 hrs access, a great resource.

Mary Ann taylor was born c 1821 in Tiverton. She married John Whitrow in 1854 in Butterleigh.
I am trying to trace details of her birth and her parents.
Thank you in anticipation.

Somerset / Wilton/Taunton Jail Records

Does anyone have access to records kept by the jail which offenders tried by the Taunton Police Court and Assizes were sent? My ancestors were regular residents and I wondered if records of admission, discharge were kept. Hoping there might be mugshots!

Is there any mention of Thomas Sparks, confectioner, his daughter Emily or any member of the Skinner family please?

That is interesting, perhaps indicative of a Victorian journalistic obsession with headgear. One of the (many) reports of many forebears brawling in the street put great weight on my 3 x g grandmother assaulting a fellow market trader and 'utterly destroying his hat' !
