Angus (Forfarshire) / Peter Duncan, Registrar Montrose
« on: Wednesday 16 February 11 00:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

Throughout the years of tracing my family in Montrose, I have noticed that an awful lot of birth, marriages and death were registered by the one person, Peter Duncan, Registrar for the District of Montrose over at least the period 1880-1900 (and most likely earlier and later). Now he must have witnessed an awful lot of events and social changes in the area, and it has prompted my interest in him as an individual.

I would like to know more about this person and was wondering if anyone would have any access to him. My access to a worldwide paid site has just lapsed and I was wondering if you can perform a census search on him with the keyword of Registrar.

Unfortunately I know nothing about him as yet, date of birth etc,   :(I am awaiting some assistance from the Montrose Library, but any help that I received, i'd be most appreciative of...I know I am asking a big challenge! Actually that's not quite true, I can confirm he is one of the registrars that had beautiful easy to read handwriting all these years later!  :)

I don't even know if Registrars moved around from District to District or if they remained in the one area.  ??? ???

Cornwall / Two deaths on one day, St Buryan
« on: Thursday 10 June 10 05:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

Could anyone please suggest how I might find out about the death of a married couple (both elderly) that occurred on the same day in 1936 short of buying the death certificates?

They were residents of Parc-an-Cady, St Buryan and I am not sure if their deaths may have made the paper's or not, I just thought it must be fairly unusal that they both died on the one day.

Any ideas would be appreciated  :)

Cornwall / Bodmin Prison inmate - help!!
« on: Monday 07 June 10 02:54 BST (UK)  »
Good morning,

I am wondering if anyone would please be able to give me any ideas of where I could look to find information about a relative who according to the 1911 census was an inmate at Bodmin Prison,

I have written to the prison but received no reply (I know that it is now not serving as a current prison, but as a tourist site). I do not know which newspapers were in existence at the time or how I would contact them. (I am in Australia so I have no local knowledge to draw upon!)

The person I am seeking information on is a Samuel Lee Gwennap, born 1874 in Mousehole. As at the 1911 census Samuel was aged 37 years.

On the 1901 census he was residing at 107 Carn-a-Langa, Paul (occupation with his second wife Grace and children so I am not sure what crime he committed, how long Samuel served and when or where he died!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards

Angus (Forfarshire) / Margaret Marshall missing in Montrsoe Census
« on: Friday 04 June 10 02:57 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I am wondering if anyone would please be able to help me with the following mystery.

I have been trying to locate Margaret Julia Bingham Marshall, born 1873 in Montrose Angus and David Marshall b 1878 both to David Marshall (b 1846) and Catherine Marshall nee Bingham (b 1848).

I have the census returns for 1881 and 1891 which show that Margaret’s older siblings and one younger, were all residing with their paternal grandparents, George & Elizabeth Marshall at Mount Road Montrose, but no sign of Margaret or David.

Margaret’s siblings were: Rebecca, Elisabeth, Ann, Christina, Catherine (born between census returns and will not appear) and David.

I have never been able to trace David’s movements following his birth in 1878. I have ordered all death certificates that fitted his age etc but to no avail.

Margaret I have been able to trace from her marriage in 1899 in Govan, Lanark, the 1901 census, births of her children and then her death, so it is just these two census returns that escapes me.

The mother of the children, Catherine and the father David separated sometime after 1878 and Catherine goes on to have another child in 1881 with a Robert Smith, with whom she is living with on the 1881 census. These two children are not with her. I have not been able to trace the father David, in 1881 on any census returns. David later goes on to divorce Catherine in 1894 and remarry another woman in 1899.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as this one has been puzzling me for a long time. A fresh set of eyes would probably do the trick!

Kind regards

Aberdeenshire / Edwin Alexander Geddes 1889
« on: Tuesday 01 June 10 06:56 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I have been searching everywhere for this elusive chat and have not been able to find any trace of a death etc after his marriage.

These are the facts I have (backed up by certificates)

Edwin Alexander Geddes was born in 1889 in Cloverbrook, Fyvie to John Geddes and Christina Geddes nee Castle.

In the 1891 and 1901 Scottish census returns the family was still residing at Cloverbrook, Fyvie.

Sometime between 1901 and 1911 he meets a Janet Inglis Bishop born 1884 in West Calder and they marry in July 1913. At this time Edwin has an occupation of Chemist's assistant and gives a usual residence of “Bruns”, Haybank Crescent, South Woodford, Essex, England. Janet (known in records as Jessie) gives as her address 7 Gloag Place, West Calder.

In 1911 prior to his marriage to Janet, Edwin is shown as a witness to the wedding of Janet's sister Mary to William Borthwick who has an occupation of Pharmacist stated (but not sure if they knew each other because of their jobs etc.)

And then Edwin and Janet (Jessie) seem to disapear and I have not been able to trace anything of them anywhere! ???

My father was named after Edwin (Edwin Geddes Bishop in 1931 in Australia, so there obviously remained some connection somewhere.

I would dearly love to solve this little mystery (mostly so I can have some indication of why my father was named after him). I don't know if they emigrated etc but have not been able to locate anything on Scotland's People, Ancestry etyc.

I would be hugely grateful if anyone had anytime to have a look at this one...

Kind regards

Cork / Julia Haggarty Cork, 1821
« on: Wednesday 21 April 10 12:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

Am seeking any information on a Julia Haggarty or variation of that name, born 1821 (as best I can tell!) in Cork, Ireland.

This is what I know:

At some stage Julia married a Robert Bingham and their first child Catherine was born in 1848 in either Carrickfergus, Ireland or Andreas, Ireland (the handwriting is very poor on the census returns).

Robert was a coastguard who was born in Inverness, Scotland and they moved to Montrose, Scotland where they had a further three children: Susanna in 1850, Robert in 1852, and Margaret in 1854. The three children born in Scotland were all baptised in a Roman Catholic Church so I am assuming taht Julia herself was of this denomination.

Each census return shows Julia as born in Cork, Ireland. It appears that Julia remained in Montrose until her death at the age of 80 years. Unfortunately Julia was in an inmate of a home for the destitute and the informant was the head of this residence and has stated as unknown, the names of Julia's parents.

Any help appreciated,

Thanks

Tipperary / Kennedy family help needed
« on: Tuesday 20 April 10 00:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am new to this site and was wondering if anyone would please be able to help me with any information on the following people:

I have a Mathew Kennedy b 1831 and Mary Hennessy born 1830 in Tipperary, Ireland.

A death certificate of a child states that they were married in 1848 in Tipperary.

Around 1850 they had a child named Ellen in Tipperary and then a son, Edmond or Edmund in 1855.

They next appear in Victoria, Australia having emigrated around 1855. Mathew’s occupation on his children’s wedding and death certificates is shown as a Gardener or Labourer.

Unfortunately I do not know anything more about them and have not been able to locate any records of a marriage etc. I have tried a number of searches on the Irish Family Foundation but I keep getting incorrect matches.

To complicate matters I cannot locate death records for them here in Australia that match to their ages and children etc. I know from the birth and deaths of their children that they were in Victoria until at least 1879 when their final daughter Margaret died at 11 years to menigitis.

I know Kennedy is a very common surname and probably Hennesy is as well, but I am desperate for even a tiny breakthrough!

I do not know if they were Roman Catholic or not, their daughter Margaret was buried with a Roman Catholic service but their eldest daughter Ellen, was married in a Church of England service.

Any help would be hugely appreciated!
