Lancashire Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Beswick Manchester
« on: Saturday 01 May 10 13:30 BST (UK)  »
There's about a hundred Mary Beswicks listed in the 1911 census in Lancashire alone.. we don't know her place of birth or date. I believe Margaret was a 'change of life' baby..meaning Mary would have been in her forties I suppose.
The earliest sibling listed on freebdm was born in 1913. As to the other children I don't know why they aren't listed..perhaps records are incomplete.

Births Dec 1913
Beswick    William    Manning    Chorlton    8c   1351
Births Jun 1918
Beswick    Agnes    Manning    Chorlton    8c   1132
Births Sep 1922
Beswick    Cyril          Manning    Chorlton    8c   1254
Births Jun 1925
Beswick    Veronica    Manning    Manchester S.    8d   174
Births Jun 1927
Beswick    Margaret    Manning    Manchester S.    8d   216

Myself and family are disputing all my mothers siblings.. 11 kids in total and in the vicinity of 20 years age difference between the oldest and youngest.

They lived in Gorton Manchester.  Parents John/Jack? and Mary Beswick (nee Manning), known children - John (oldest?), Agnes, Cyril, Peter, Mary and Margaret the youngest born in 1927.  Possibly a William.

Can only find four children listed on freebdm.

Any help appreciated.

Lancashire / old addresses / census deciphoring
« on: Saturday 01 May 10 12:52 BST (UK)  »
My relatives seemed to have lived in what's now redeveloped areas of Manchester, many of the streets gone. Are there old street directories to be found online? Or do I need to get the magnifying glass out on old street maps?

With census information, addresses seem to double up on localities. Am I correct in saying an address like x street, Broughton Salford is the suburb Broughton in the Hundred of Salford?

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: Amelia Cowburn, Herbert Wilson - Manchester

I can't recall my father ever mentioning any uncles/brother-in-laws so may be the right one... It has also been passed down her 'parents' didn't want her to marry due to a heart condition (which did eventually kill her). So they were definitely around when they married.

As I mentioned it's known her sisters went to Canada, not sure when. Would be interested if they showed up on the Chorlton Union Register of Children sent to Canada. (Any idea how to access?) Or other record.

Having had discussion with my sister, given known facts, locations, vague memories and coincidences,(eg; My father took on Joseph as his middle name.) it's highly likely Amelia's parents were Joseph and Sarah Cowburn. (Marriage cert will confirm)  But whilst waiting, any info on Joseph et al would be greatly appreciated.

The other Amelia is avoiding me in 1891 (I will keep working at it) but i have come across this family ....  not wishing to confuse the issue but you might like to put them on the back burner in case they link in later

The name Cowburn is said to be a 'location identity' of Lancashire and supposedly came about when they brought in compulsory surnames for taxation purposes so chances are any or all Cowburns are related.

??? I better get that marriage certificate ...  If you need to trace anyone in Australia look me up.

Hmmm... leaning now towards the Mancurians.. I recall my father saying they met at a dance ..maybe Bell Vue ballroom as Herbert lived nearby.

Thanks .. you have found more info in minutes than I have in days... probably tell I am new to this. Much appreciated xx :)

See my last post - both have at least 2 sisters by 1901!

They bred well didn't they..lol

I'll add to the confusion... my dad said his mother died when he was 12.. which was 1932. The only Amelia I have found that died in 1932 was 37..meaning she was born 1895'ish

First of all have you got Amelia and Herbert's marriage cert? That would be the first step. Hopefully it will give a fathers name and occupation , and thus help find her in 1901 census.

Though with such an unusual name there may not be many to choose from! I will have a look.

Am looking into getting the marriage cert..  my father did have a copy but was destroyed in a flood.. My father, Alfred Wilson, was their only child.

Herbert changed career and went on to become a hairdresser after Amelia died so he could look after my father.

Confused because allegedly Amelia was in Chorley and Chorlton on the same night of the 1911 census.

I think this is because there are two Amelia Cowburns around of the same age.

FreeBMD (have you not checked there?) has two births within a few months:

Oct/Nov/Dec 1889
Chorley 8e 496
Amelia Cowburn

Jul/Aug/Sep 1889
Manchester 8d 218
Amelia Cowburn
Now even more confused.. I could only find one on freebmd. .Amelia I was told had two or more sisters.. the Chorley one doesn't.  :-\ * updated .

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Amelia Cowburn, Herbert Wilson - Manchester

Hi, I am seeking info on my paternal grandparents whom I never met, Amelia Cowburn and Herbert Vaughan Wilson. They married in 1918 in Prestwich ? Manchester. Catholics I believe.

Herbert I have some info on and found him on a family tree..
http://www.bernardwilson.com/ghtout/gp10.htm

But Amelia I am at a bit of a dead end and confused. Dead end because I can only find she was born 'about' 1890 (told 1889) in Chorley, died 1932 in Manchester. Two sisters known to have gone to Canada, names unknown. Possibly sent via workhouses to Canada.

Confused because allegedly Amelia was in Chorley and Chorlton on the same night of the 1911 census.

So if anyone could help me out with any info like baptism , addresses, grave site, marriage etc; it would be greatly appreciated.

20,000 k away.
