Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Re: Help scanning a textured photograph
« on: Tuesday 14 September 21 15:58 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone please give me some advice in the best way to scan a photograph that is printed on quite textured paper? When I scan in the usual way the texture seems to cast shadows.

Or is the best way to improve the photo only after scanning by some of your "magic"?

Here is a snip of the photo in question.

Many thanks in advance.

Could you scan the whole picture? We could look to use a blur but I think the dress looks to have some detail that we would want to keep, however the magicians may be able to help  ;D

Hi Maddsy

Have you got a setting on your scanner to select the source type as "Newspaper" rather than "photograph"?

Ive used that with some success in the past

Please accept my apologies in advance if I am way off the mark here  :)
As I am a rank amateur at photo restoration I have been finding this section of rootschat ideal for me to practice  restoring damaged old photos. When I saw the photo from woody123, with the ‘light reflection’ across the middle of the photo I thought – that’s a good one to have an attempt at. As it happened I was unable to the two dark and one light section together and when I saw the restored images posted from the restores I gave up my attempts, on this photo, to blend the light and dark  ;)
However I did notice that all who had posted a restored image had left a section that I thought was blurred. The section = the soldier’s left elbow + the brides dress next to his elbow.
Now it could just be my perceptive of wedding dresses ( I have never worn one  :) ) and is there something I am missing but my eyes say it could do with a bit repair. I have downloaded trishane’s colour version and used that to do a bit of a tidy up of the area I mentioned above.
I have joined up extracts from the repaired photos to show what I mean. If I have this all wrong then please ignore my comments and if anyone knows how to get my comment deleted please do so.
Eggy

Ive had a closer look and it looks like some detail is missing in the bodice (see my red arrows). Hard to say why as it isnt the reflection so it could be a small indentation in that spot on the original but exaggerated by being a picture of a picture if you see what I mean. Will try to build that out after Ive taken the dog out
