Surrey / Henry Jackson
« on: Tuesday 09 July 13 12:24 BST (UK)  »
Henry Jackson, known as Harry was born in Croydon, Surrey on July 23, 1876. He arrived in South Australia as an 18 year old, and after working on the wharves at Port Pirie, he was elected to Parliament and in 1911, he becomes the youngest ever Speaker of the House of Assembly in South Australia. Can someone locate his parents for me? I have also seen his birth date as 1873.
Thankyou

Thankyou Forfarian. Your advice has been very helpful. I have one child born 1855 and there is much of value on it. I have had a look at the NAS site and will work into that eventually. Access to the newspapers has given lots of potential material. The business that went broke was making farm machinery. Looking at the UK digital on-line newspapers has made me wonder how long we will have free access to our papers in Australia! Thankyou Skoosh. I wonder whether one of my antecedents worked at Carron Iron Works. He was listed as a steam engine maker in 1855 on his daughter's birth certificate.

Stirlingshire / Andrew Lindsay Peter Gardner Millwright and Engineers, Stirling
« on: Sunday 31 March 13 07:43 BST (UK)  »
I have found reference to a notice of impending bankruptcy proceedings against the business of Peter Gardner and Andrew Lindsay, millwrights and engineers of Stirling.  This notice was published in The London Gazette of October 8, 1861.
I am keen to know more about this business, where it was, and what the outcome of this action may have been. I believe that Andrew came to Australia in 1865 and started a foundry "The Carron Ironworks"
Thankyou

Australia / Re: Isabella McAULEY Geelong/Ballarat
« on: Sunday 29 July 12 16:14 BST (UK)  »
:)As a result of all the help given, I have the information I need to kick on. Cando, the birth record of Janet, showed she was one of eleven including my Isabella, so we hit the jackpot there. The record suggests that the mother Jane Sharp was deceased. The database of the Geelong area shows a Peter Aitken in financial strife in the early 1860's. I have plenty to pursue there.
I also have the marriage certificate for the Ronald Macauley and Isabella Aitken  in Ballarat in 1877. I can now find details of my grandmother's adoption.

Thanks to all for the help. Greatly appreciated.

Isabella's second Catherine was adopted by the Howe Family in Adelaide and was my grandmother. I am keen to explore her origins further and your information has been very helpful. I will chase the relevant references you have provided.  :) Thanks Dee and Leonie

I am trying to find out about this lady. The information I have is from a birth registration of a child Catherine at the Lying in Hospital at Ballarat on 10 August 1883. The document I have suggests her maiden name was Aitken and she was 26 years of age at the time of the birth. She was born in Geelong. I hope someone can give me a lead on her. Thankyou in anticipation.

Hi Norrie
I am interested in Lindsay's in Dunfermline. I have an Andrew Lindsay who married Isabella Pottie and had children born in Dunfermline, but have no death for him. He was born in1786, Isabella was born Nov 16, 1787 and she died in 1866 in Adelaide SA, emigrating with her son and grandchildren. Other children were John, Robert, Elizabeth, Andrew and James.
Thanks

Stirlingshire / Re: McLaren in Falkirk
« on: Friday 23 December 11 05:58 GMT (UK)  »
Thankyou for your help. All this information has been useful to me. Andrew Lindsay and Janet emigrated to South Australia with their family in 1865 and set up a foundry known as the Carron Iron Works, so I assume they had association with the iron industry of the same name at home. Am I right in thinking the issuing of banns in Falkirk and Denny suggests Andrew was from Denny and Janet from Falkirk?

Stirlingshire / McLaren in Falkirk
« on: Thursday 22 December 11 07:36 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for information about the parents of Janet McLaren born in 1790, who married Edward Derby in Falkirk in 1816. I believe her parents may be John McLaren and Catherine Struthers, but have no other information about them. Does anyone have them on their tree?
