« on: Friday 25 March 22 15:45 GMT (UK)  »
Sent for the will of someone who died in 2018.

Have got one sheet of information showing names of Executors and the amount deceased left.

No information about beneficiaries.          Have I ordered it incorrectly on-line or are 'modern' wills  ot accessible ?

Australia / Whittlesea Victoria Australia
« on: Sunday 13 March 22 21:18 GMT (UK)  »
1891 U K census John Dorrington b. 1852 'Whittlesea.'   Despite extensive search not found birth certificate and no record of him before 1891.

Bit of a long shot but could he have been born in Whittlesea Victoria and then come to the U K ?

Can Birth/Marriage Records for Whittlesea for 1850-1881 be accessed.  Any advice much appreciated.

The Lighter Side / Mental Hospital records
« on: Tuesday 08 March 22 16:12 GMT (UK)  »
Posted earlier (can't find thread) about my efforts to get copies of my father's medical records from the time he was in a North Wales Mental Hospital. (an in-patient for periods between 1960 and 1976.)
Letter today saying that

'........confirm that records have been destroyed in line with National Retention and Destruction guidelines.'

I'm assuming that it's not just my father's records that have been destroyed but the whole lot from that period ???

I will write questioning this - anyone any thoughts ?

thanks.

John Cook married Susan Lilley in Whittlesea Cambridgeshire in J1881 (3b 1003)

Susan Cook dies J1884  aged 22 in Whittlesea  (3b 332)

I have Susan Lilley aged 19 on the 1881 census - RG 11  1693   Glassmoor Whittlesea.

she is the daughter of William Lilley aged 60 Ag Lab and Elizabeth aged 38?

Is the above 19 year old Susan Lilley the one who married John Cook in 1881 and died aged 22 in 1884  ??

Would like to know the age of above John Cook when he married in 1881 and name of his father.

The Lighter Side / Adoption.
« on: Wednesday 16 February 22 13:25 GMT (UK)  »
Even if the adoption is planned for shortly after the birth will the baby be registered initially with the name of the birth mother and father in the name the birth parent(s) choose ?

Once the child is adopted is he/she given another Birth Certificate with new names (if adoptive parents choose new names) also with the names of the adoptive parents?

Thanks.

Family History Beginners Board / 1921 Census - a surprise.
« on: Thursday 13 January 22 13:58 GMT (UK)  »
Found my mother aged 10 months with her father (my grandfather) staying with relatives on a farm about 10 miles from their home.

Took a bit of searching and found my grandmother a 'patient' in a 'Poor Law Institution' near the farm.

My grandfather was a local Methodist minister - they lived in a large manse and were reasonably financially comfortable.

Any suggestions why would someone like my grandmother - financially o.k. with close family be in a 'Poor Law Institution' - I'm assuming it wasn't a hospital?

The Lighter Side / Solicitors Records.
« on: Sunday 09 January 22 13:58 GMT (UK)  »
Solicitors records will hold a lot of information of interest to a family historian  -  records of property ownership/transfers - records of legal matters people will have sought advice about etc.

Are these records accessible to a next of kin relative as are medical records ?  That is, would a solicitor have to open records if asked to do that ?
