World War One / RAAF badges - help in identifying owner
« on: Wednesday 29 May 13 14:18 BST (UK)  »
My friend found a Victory Medal for a WW1 Australian soldier and has been trying to trace his descendants to return it to them but no luck so far http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,600466.30.html

However found with the medal were these RAAF badges and we wondered if it was possible to identify owner as probably a relative.

Australia / the Stag (ship) arrived 1848 passenger list
« on: Tuesday 08 January 13 20:54 GMT (UK)  »
The Stag arrived in Victoria from London on Jan 23 1848 with the first bishop of Melbourne.  More importantly  (to me ;D) there was also a passenger Emma Mitchell on board.  I found this mention on trove
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article4763068

Does anyone have access to the passenger list so I can see if she is my Emma Mitchell? (born about 1833 in London)

It's a long shot as I doubt that my ancestor would be a cabin passenger but I've hit a massive brick wall tracing her origins.

England / Emma Frances MITCHELL b 1833 Harrow
« on: Tuesday 13 November 12 11:22 GMT (UK)  »
Please help as this is a gigantic brick wall for me.  (I posted on Middlesex Lookup board about 12 months ago but did not receive any replies so I hope it is OK to post here)

Emma Frances MITCHELL (or possibly Frances Emma Mitchell, but always known as Emma) is my 2nd great grandmother.
She married in Australia in 1849 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XTZ9-N6Y and I do have her marriage certificate but no parents given (and I contacted church who said no other records).

On her death certificate 1901 (NSW) (all other known details about children etc are correct) it states
   born 1833 Harrow, London
   father James Mitchell, coachman
   mother Mary Farrell
age 68, married at 16, spent 53 years in Australia

On her children's birth certificates she also says she was born in London.

I cannot find a James Mitchell/Mary Farrell marriage (or anything close) nor the family on the 1841 census.  I have looked for siblings born after registration in England and also on death index in Australia without success.  Nor can I find her on passenger lists (nor her parents but don't know if they emigrated or not).  She emigrated at 15'ish so perhaps in a poor house?

Is this the sort of brick wall which I should cover with ivy and make a feature or is there some chance of breaking it down?  :)

regards,
   Ros

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / COMPLETED thanks - Handwriting/signature help
« on: Wednesday 07 November 12 13:30 GMT (UK)  »
Can you help me to decipher the names of the witnesses please?  The wedding was between Edward Wadeson and Emma Mitchell and then squashed beneath them are the witnesses.
I'm thinking that they could be Robert (maybe Johnston?) and Caroline (maybe Thomson?)

I'm hoping that the witnesses names may give me a clue to break down my brick wall with Emma so any help appreciated.

Australia Lookups completed / COMPLETED Ann SOWDEN widow South Australia 1870's
« on: Monday 13 August 12 08:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,
The SA indexes online have been down for days now  .... :(

I am looking for an Ann (b 1845-55) who married a Mr Sowden who died so that Ann Sowden was a widow in June 1877 when she married Joseph Kellow (in NSW but I think she came from SA  as he did and where they both returned to live).  I have the marriage transcript and it has many blanks and I have contacted the Uniting Church Archives  :)

Ann and Joseph Kellow were divorced in 1898 (Norwood). (lots on trove).   They had a child Joseph Kellow(1879-1912).

In  Dec 1899 there is a "wine granted"  transfer from Ann Kellow of Adelaide Arcade to Ann Kellow and Albert E McDermott (trove)

She was quite a spirited lady and sued several people during 1890's (from trove) including someone for making an improper proposal and for slander - and she won!  :D  I really admire her :)   So I'm hoping to find out who she was before the marriage and what happened to her after the divorce.

regards,
   Ros

Australia / Emily Frances WADESON in Vic please
« on: Thursday 26 July 12 12:59 BST (UK)  »
Emily Frances WADESON (Victoria)

Emily WADESON married Edward FREEMAN in Vic 1898 (from ancestry reg 4519 )
Can anyone see any details such as her parents?  She sounds like she belongs to my family but I cannot find her birth or death  (on ancestry or VIC BDM) to check her parents.
(I thought I had cornered the market on Wadesons in Victoria ;D and both Emily and Frances are frequently-used names).

On electoral rolls
1914  Sth Melb FREEMAN Emily Frances HD and Edward a carpenter
1919  Sth Melb FREEMAN Emily Frances HD and Edward a carpenter
   ... gap when Edward dies/disappears ...
1936  Sth Melb FREEMAN Emily Frances HD Emily Veronica sales, John Martin kitchen hand
1943  Sth Melb FREEMAN Emily Frances HD Emily Veronica sales  John Martin kitchen hand
1949  Sth Melb FREEMAN Emily Frances HD and Emily Veronica sales
(there is another different Emily Frances Freeman in Ascotvale)

I have found the births of children to the couple between 1898 and 1910 but nothing which tells me whether she belongs to my family or not  ???.

Australia / John MACLEAN (from W.A.) 28th batallion
« on: Friday 01 June 12 06:44 BST (UK)  »
We are looking for family and descendants of John MacLean service number 344 B company 28th battalion 7th brigade as Greg has found his war medal in W.A. and wants to return it to family.

John MacLean born c1884 in Altandhu Scotland, father Donald MacLean.  From digitised WW1 records he enlisted in Northam, W.A. and was a farmer/labourer.  From the AIF project http://www.aif.adfa.edu.au:8080/showPerson?pid=184049 it says he was from Narrogin (but it also says father Duncan and we believe that to be a mistranscription)

From the kind rootschatters on Scotland board we have found that his mother is probably Christina and he was still alive in Australia in 1955 (and what a spectacular place Altandhu, Coigach is). http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,600146.0.html

So far we have eliminated :
John Every MacLean who married Winifred May Burton in Northam, W.A. in 1933 as he also enlisted in WW1 and died in 1960 at age 66.
John MacLean who married Edna Elaine Kirkpatrick in 1930 in Perth and lived in Narrogin as he died in 1952 and death notice gives parents as William and Janet MacLean.

Any help  greatly appreciated,
  Ros

Ross & Cromarty / Town called Altandhes in Ross-shire?
« on: Wednesday 30 May 12 00:55 BST (UK)  »
Is there a town called Altandhes or Altandhos in Ross-shire?  I have been trying to google it without success.  It would help to narrow down searches for a birth if I knew which district it was in.

John MacLean born c 1884 enlisted in Australian Army in WW1 giving this as his birth town and his father Donald's address as the same town.  His father lived at "sea view house" so the town is on the coast ...?

I have attached images of the address in case it helps

Any help appreciated,
   Ros

United States of America / John Timothy REYNOLDS
« on: Wednesday 09 May 12 09:32 BST (UK)  »
John Timothy Reynolds was born 1830+/-1 in USA to parents Benjamin Reynolds and Lucy Gowin.  This info is from his marriage certificate (1875 in Australia).  He also had a brother Edmund born about 1833.

In 1853 John and Edmund sailed on the Norma  from New York for Australia and I know about John after that.

I'd love to find their birth, their parents' marriage and if there were any other siblings.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Ros
