England / Court of Chancery records
« on: Friday 08 March 13 16:01 GMT (UK)  »
Michael CUFF, originally of Forthill, Co. Mayo owned a slave plantation estate in Emmaus, Jamaica and died in Jamaica around 1828. His sons then returned to England and to Ireland. There was subsequently an attempt to make a claim against his estate which led to a case in the Court of Chancery, in England, which may have been heard around 1836. Would anyone know whether papers from such a court case would still survive, and if so where they might be held?

Monaghan / Brethren - Lisagore, Co. Monaghan
« on: Friday 07 December 12 13:57 GMT (UK)  »
I am interested in two HAMILTON families who had farms beside each other in Lisagore townland, Co. Monaghan. (Parish of Donaghmoyne). This is them in 1901:

One family was Presbyterian and attended Broomfield Presbyterian Church. The other was “Christian Brethren”. I suspect they too were Presbyterian at one time before becoming Brethren, but there’s no sign of them in Broomfield Presbyterian church records (which go back to 1841). Anyone got any ideas where they would have attended church? Also do Christian Brethren practice infant baptism?

Cork / Anthony Alexander KENNEDY
« on: Wednesday 05 December 12 21:31 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find the grave of Anthony Alexander KENNEDY who died in Middleton, Co. Cork on 15th March 1884, aged 61. He was RC, but was originally from Co Derry, so not a native of the area. He was a fairly senior official in the Inland Revenue in the area. Any suggestions for:

1.   Where me might be buried?
2.   Which local paper a funeral notice might have been put in?

Armed Forces / John GILLESPIE stoker RN
« on: Wednesday 15 August 12 14:06 BST (UK)  »
I am interested in tracing any naval records that may exist for John GILLESPIE born c 1883 in Bellaghy townland, Glarryford, nr Ballymena, Co Antrim.

This is him in 1901:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Down/Victoria/Fraser_Street/1218008/

When he married in Belfast in December 1910 his address was 92 Henry St, Belfast and his occupation was “stoker RN”. In the 1911 census his wife is at home alone in Belfast. I have searched the overseas Navy records on the 1911 English census but cannot see a likely exact match there either.

I have searched for him in the Navy records on the NAS site but cannot see one that relates to him. I do not know his service number, the names of any ships that he served on, nor what happened to him after 1910. Any ideas on how to track his naval records or otherwise find out what happened to him after 1910?

Down / Mystery townland in Co Down
« on: Thursday 26 July 12 18:41 BST (UK)  »
I have found a baptism in 1790, in the parish of Magheralin, Co Down. The townland looks to be “Banagh”, but I cannot find any such townland on the usual sites. Does anyone know whether this is an obsolete name, and if so, what the townland is called now?

Ireland / Marriage ceremony conducted at home
« on: Wednesday 05 January 11 12:22 GMT (UK)  »
I have come across a Presbyterian marriage conducted in the bride's family home in Co. Antrim in 1883, by special licence.

How common was it, in Ireland, to marry at home? Were there any special criteria that had to be fulfilled for a ceremony to be conducted there rather than in church (eg illness).
