The Lighter Side / relation in orphanage?
« on: Saturday 11 June 05 15:53 BST (UK)  »
If any of you have an ancestor who was in an orphanage ........
for example in the 1890's.Please do not believe you need to employ a researcher (please do so if you wish) or be put off thinking that it would be too difficult to get records. Records are still there and  although you need to supply a lot of details and certs. to prove your relationship the authorities are excellent and extremely helpful. They regard this as important as if the child was there just a few  decades ago. They most certainly will not hand out info. willy nilly. We should be half way there with the certs. anyway. Although I'm only half way through the process......if you really need you want the records ........please go for it.Kevin.

The Lighter Side / ages of rellies?
« on: Thursday 09 June 05 18:54 BST (UK)  »
How often have you dismissed someone as being too young/old  or helped someone out only  to be told "oh no....mine was 3 years older!" Over the last 2 years I have found it amazing how so many of my lot in various counties in Eng/Wales have gained or lost years whish conflict with certs and censuses.Mainly I put this down to illiteracy....... how were they to know their age accurately over 20-40 years? Obviously there can be other reasons....... work related? One doesn't want to appear older than their Husband/wife (can't get used to partner)Today I got my GG Grandfathers death cert. he was 55 and for the first time coincides exactly with his birth record! All I'm trying to say is ........give a bit of leeway regarding ages.......there's enough around today who seem so confused reg. age as it is! lol Regards,Kevin.

Herefordshire Lookup Requests / Merrick/Saysell various spellings Ross. 1841
« on: Thursday 09 June 05 18:28 BST (UK)  »
Hello All, Sue and others have been particularly kind to me and I have been given huge amounts of info. reg 1841 and 1851 censuses. I know it is frustrating if info. has already been given......... but I'm damned if I can find it. I have my GX2 Grandfather John Merrick/Merick/Meyrick (the joys of illiteracy) boarding with a Saysell/Saycell family in 1841. Can someone finf the entry for me again please? John aged 10-16 he was illiterate and the son of Ann.......I'm wondering if Ann that he is with in 1841 is in fact his  mother............this family have driven me daft for nearly 2 years.I received his death cert. today and I would love to get his family back to his Grandparents! I apologise once again but if you could give me the details again I would appreciate it. I'm hoping to get to HEF. in sept/oct and would love to have as much as possible. regards,Kevin.
