Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Re: 1851 Hicks
« on: Thursday 08 December 05 14:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Tanja
Thanks! That does look like it could be Josiah, his age and that of Edith fit well with what i had. Its just confusing when they change their place of birth!

What year of birth did ebenezer have? I've a feeling he could well be a brother of Josiah.
I've just found details of an Alfred Hicks b1828 in Tunbridge wells and a William Hicks b1826 also in Tunbridge wells and i'm almost certain they are brothers of Josiah (their fathers name was William and mother was Elizabeth!). Just a shame they weren't living at home on the 1851 census!

Hi,
Thanks so much for trying to help!
In 1861 i have
William Hicks b1803 Hertsmonceux, sussex
Elizabeth Hicks b1819 Williton, Somerset
Mary Ann Hicks b.1848 Taunton
Edward Hicks b.1850 Taunton
Henry Hicks b.1852 Taunton
Gideon Hicks b.1853 Taunton
Walter Hicks b.1855 Taunton
Ester Hicks b.1860 Taunton
They were living at Mile Lane, Bishops Hill, Taunton.

I haven't been able to find Josiah, Edith, Eliezer or Betsey on the 1861. I'm guessing that Edith and Betsey would of been married by 1861 anyway. And i think Eliezer might be a miss spelling of Elinger (i've found a John Elinger Hicks born 1840 which could be him? However, his birth was registered in Dover, Kent so i'm not sure? And there is an Elenyer Hicks on the 1881 census whose birth year is 1839 and it says he was born in Tunbridge wells, kent and he is living in Taunton....its a possible, but not a definate...yet!) So maybe the family were in Kent in 1841? Its never easy is it?!

Hey
Thanks for such a quick reply!
Theres more children there than i realised! Gives me more people to investigate!
Just looking at their ages, i'd guess that elizabeth was either lying about her age or was the second wife!
Strange that their birth years don't match with their ages? Is that a common error on censuses?
I've a lot more researching to do now!

Thanks again for your help, you're a star!

Hey,
I'm probably going to confuse matters now, but do you think that the Thomas that Kev found on 1901 is actually your Thomas and he had married again? Maybe thats why Edith had moved in with her parents - she and Thomas had split up. I'm only suggesting because it happened to me! I spent ages searching for Sam and Annie. Found Annie and all the kids, and it said she was married but head of the household. Eventually found Sam several miles away living with his 'wife' Georgina! Though i never actually found a marriage reg for Sam and Georgina. I don't know how strict the law was on remarrying without divorce, or even if they had to actually be married before they could change surname.

Just a thought!

Completed Census Requests / Re: 1881 Census - Martha Susannah Palmer
« on: Wednesday 30 November 05 18:06 GMT (UK)  »
Hey.
I think i may of found Martha! Hurrah!

In 1881 at 21 London Street Sussex Hotel, London, Middlesex were-
Christopher PIKE 42 Head b.Dawlish, Devon Licensed Victualler
Eliza PIKE 42 Wife b.Castle Morten, Worcester
SUSAN PALMER 23 Unm b.Page Mills, Worcester Barmaid
Elizabeth Garrison 23 Unm b.Brighwell, Oxford General Servant
William Wiett 32 Unm b.Westminster, Middlesex Pot man

I'm certain this is her, using her middle name Susannah. Also she's living with the Pike's which you mentioned gave her a teapot when she married. Wonder why she was in London? Did she marry Alfred in London or did she return to Warwick? I'm curious now!!

Hey.
In 1881 at The ForgeMills Hotel, Coleshill, Warwick lived -
Ann Palmer Head Widow age 41 b.Whitacre, Warwick Innkeeper
Ellen Palmer Stepdaughter Unm 24 b.Birmingham
Charles Palmer Stepson Unm 19 b.Coleshill Occ - Miller
William J Palmer Stepson Unm 14 b.Coleshill Scholar
Harry Palmer Son 6 b.Coleshill Scholar
Walter G Palmer Son 2 b.Coleshill

Ann must have been john's second wife? And John must of died between 1878 and 1881 (due to birth of walter). Haven't been able to find Martha yet, but i'll keep looking! I'll try looking for her other siblings that you found in 1871 to see if she is with them.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Re: 1841 + 51 Crowther North Bierley
« on: Sunday 16 October 05 15:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi!
My main link is through Richards son Henry. But i've been having a lot of bother with him, and trying to find who his parents were. I'm now not that certain that i've found the right family! But i do have info on some of Richards other children if you need it. I don't suppose you'd have any info on Henry Crowther would you? Thats probably not the family name you're looking at! Theres not many people that are doing Crowthers!!
If you can help, or want any of the info i have then let me know,
