Dumfriesshire / Agnes Kennedy Ms Moffat
« on: Sunday 19 February 12 14:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

could somebody check a Hoddam MI for me please

I'm looking for an Agnes Kennedy or Rae maiden surname Moffat

her husband should be William Kennedy who died before 1841 I think

She born about 1769 and died about 1847, I think she might be on "Hoddom Monumental Inscriptions Nr 186"

I'd be keen to find anything else on the stone, as the Clan Moffat website claims her father was James Moffat 1721-1821 (ie 100 years old) and give her a different husband (a George Rae) to William Kennedy I expected.

the clan moffat page is available at http://genealogy.clanmoffat.org/getperson.php?personID=I9236&tree=UKEire

looks like it could be useful, for some

best wishes

Kincardineshire / Lost Mary Mackie born Dunnottar / Stonehaven about 1812/13/14
« on: Saturday 21 January 12 10:41 GMT (UK)  »
I am currently trying to help an eldery friend research her family, and we have hit a brickwall

I am trying to find the birth of a Mary Mackie born about 1812-14 in Dunnottar / Stonehaven area but so far have had no success

I think she marries a William Wyness in Udny 26 Oct 1834, and they live in Aberdeen

and on the Aberdeen cenus records she states the following

1841 born 1811 Scotland
1851 born 1812 Dunnottar
1861 born 1813 Kincardineshire
1871 born 1812 Stonehaven

but I cant find a birth in the OPRs or the IGI

there is a couple Alexander Mackie and Mary Rodgers who might be the parents, they seem to be the only likely couple in Dunottar, they have a daughter Jean born 1818 whose birth record can be found and a son Alexander born around 1809 who can be found via census records, although no obvious birth record for him seems to exist.

If anybody has any ideas I'd be very grateful

Kirkcudbrightshire / John Gordon Kinna - Nanmill
« on: Friday 06 January 12 10:18 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know where Nanmill is ?

in the Urr opr there are the following two entries

John Gordon lawful son of James Kinna and Ravenscroft McMillan was born at Nanmill 2nd March and baptised 20th March

and

John Gordon Kinna died 01/01/1836 at Nammill aged 7 months

I presume that Nanmill must be somewhere in the URR parish, but it may possibly be somewhere near Twynholm or Borgue

I am interested as there are also the following two entries in the URR oprs

25/03/1830  Douglas lawful son of James Kinna and Ravenscroft McMillan was born in Twynholm

25/08/1832 - Alexander lawful son of James Kinna and Ravenscroft McMillan was born in Twynholm

I cant see any reason why these are being announced in URR oprs as the father James Kinna was born in Borgue 01/09/1789 and the mother Ravenscroft McMillan was apparently born in Minnigaff between 1789 - 1795, although I cant find a birth record for her

but strangely their wedding was recorded in Twynholm OPRs as follows

1812 Twynholm OPR - Nov 27, James McKinna and Ravenscroft McMillan were regularly proclaimed here and married this day in Minnigaff, but there does not seem to be a record of it taking place in Minnigaff !!

If anyone can help shed some light why these odd entries pop up in different parishes I'd be very grateful

thanks

Hello,

I have several groups of Ancestors from around early 1700s through to about the 1880s from Mirfield, Thornhill, Ossett and surrounding areas. They tend to be listed as Weavers or Clothiers for the most part.

The main family names are Sheard / Rowley / Peace and Haigh

I would be grateful if someone could recommend some local history books / websites on the area and the textile industry just for background reading

Thanks in advance

Hello,

I would be grateful if someone could find out if there are headstones in St Augustines, Scisset for

Sarah Rowley Nee Sheard born 1793 Thornhill
buried St Augstines, Scisset 29th January 1870

and her husband

William Rowley born 1799 he always states Thornhill but I think he was probably baptised in Ossett Green,
buried St Augstines Scisset 4th Aug 1886

William also re-married an Ann Dawson on 6th March 1871, the marriage record for this second marriage gives his fathers name as William and Anns as Matthew Townend

any help gratefully received

Dumfriesshire / Where is Luce Graveyard
« on: Sunday 02 October 11 22:12 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

does anyone know the location of Luce Graveyard and if any MIs have been transcribed.

George Chamber's "Caledonia" published in 1824 mentions it as follows

"The present parish of Hoddom comprehends the three parishes of Hoddom, Luce and Ecclesfechan which were united in the year 1609"  ...... snip ..... The church of Luce stood on the east side of the Annan below the influx of the Mein at a hamlet which still bears the name of Luce The church has been entirely demolished but its appropriate cemetery is still used for its original purpose"

But I cannot find it on the old OS 6" maps, or on google maps

I have received an email about the following inscriptions which apparently are there

Luce Graveyard

Here lyes John Kennedy son to George Kennedy in Yeats, (Yetts) he died 30th May year 1785 aged 5 years and 10 months also Mary Kennedy his sister, she died 31st December in the same year aged 8 months also Thomas Kennedy their son who died 10th February year 1790 aged 8 months.

Here lyes Margaret (sic) Irving spouse to Thomas Kennedy in Ditewhat (?) who departed this life on November year 1704 aged 45 years. Here lyes John Kennedy in Yets, he died January 11th year 1793 aged 79 years and Jean Henderson (?)

and I'd love to know of any other Kennedys which may be buried there if it still exists

thanks in advance

Dumfriesshire / Property records for Dumfriesshire
« on: Sunday 02 October 11 12:36 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

Hopefully someone could point me in the right direction, where could I find details of who owned or lived in a farm around 1790-1815

I am particularly interested in Yetts farm which was a couple of miles south of Middlebie and about the same distance to the east of Ecclefechan.

Would I have to visit Dumfries or Edinburgh record offices or is their a source online

thanks

Dumfriesshire / Mary Kennedy of Middlebie Birth & Marriage details missing
« on: Monday 19 September 11 14:57 BST (UK)  »
Hello

hopefully some one can help me with the following brickwall

I am looking for the birth record of Mary Kennedy and her marriage record to Isaac Pattinson

I know the following from the 1855 birth record of her son Isaac Pattinson

Isaac her son was born on 8th March 1855 in Canonbie his father was Isaac Pattinson aged 40 born Ambleside Westmorland, His mother was Mary Pattinson maiden surname Kennedy aged 41 born Middlebie

Isaac was Marys 4th child and she and Isaac were married in 1846 in Middlebie

on the 1851, 61 and 71 census she always says she was born in Middlebie in 1812 or 1813 after 1871 they have moved to england and the birthplace is simply listed as Scotland but the year stays the same.

The problem though is that I cannot find her birth on either Scotlands people or IGI, nor can I find any record of her marriage to Isaac Pattinson in 1846 at Middlebie, are there big gaps in the Middlebie records ?

they had the following other children

Abraham Pattinson (recorded as Patterson) born Middlebie 23/11/1847
Agnes Pattinson born Canonbie 24/03/1850
Mary Jane Pattinson born Canonbie 17/08/1852
Isaac Pattinson born Canonbie 08/03/1855 as detailed above
Margaret Ann Pattinson born Kirkpatrick Fleming 1859

Marys husband Isaac was a blacksmith

My grandmother who would be Mary Kennedys granddaughter had a bowl with the following inscription "George and Jenny Kennedy Yetts 1810"

Yetts can be seen on the OS Six inch first edition maps of 1843-82 in the top left hand corner of Dumfriesshire sheet LVIII it is a couple of miles due south of Middlebie and about the same due east of Ecclefechan.

The presumption is that George and Jenny were the parents of Mary and that the bowl may be a wedding present, although no-one in the family can confirm this

If anyone can help locate her birth record or her marriage record I'd be very grateful

Any info on the George and Jenny Kennedy would be most helpful as well

best wishes
