Staffordshire / Mary CLARKE, Ellastone, 1770's
« on: Wednesday 07 June 23 15:05 BST (UK)  »
Mary was the second of 4 children baptized in Ellastone by Thomas & Elizabeth CLARKE, whose family seemed to comprise:-

18 Jul 1773  Samuel
05 Apr 1775 Mary
03 Jul  1778 Ann
02 Jul  1780 Elizabeth

The only marriage between a Thomas CLARKE and an Elizabeth XXXXX which I've been able to find is:-

11 May 1752 - Thomas CLARK m Elizabeth COLLIER in Ellastone

and they had 4 children who were all baptized in Norbury between 1753 and 1759. That they seemed to have no more children might be explained by

30 Jul 1759  burial of Elizabeth CLARK in Ellastone

This marriage seems to be far too early, as it would make Elizabeth about 42 when Samuel was born and 49 by the time of daughter Elizabeth's birth in 1780, but I cannot find another Thomas & Elizabeth marriage between then and 1773.

This might be Thomas's burial:-

29 Feb 1784  bur of Thomas CLARKE, aged 88, in Ellastone

making him 84 when daughter Elizabeth was born!

I am confused; can anyone help, please?

The Common Room / CLARK - Derbs/Staffs
« on: Monday 05 June 23 15:02 BST (UK)  »
Mary CLARKE was bap 05 Apr 1775 in Ellastone, Staffs, parents Thomas & Elizabeth.

The only marriage I've been able to find is:-

11 May 1752 - Thomas CLARK m Elizabeth COLLIER in Ellastone

Their offspring were:-

16 Feb 1753  Richard    bap in Norbury & Roston, Derbs
       do         Thomas         do            do          do
15 May 1757 John              do            do          do
06 May 1759 Joseph           do            do          do

Then follows a hiatus of some 14 years until

18 Jul 1773  Samuel     bap in Ellastone
05 Apr 1775 Mary                  do
03 Jul  1778 Ann                    do
02 Jul  1780 Elizabeth            do

I find it hard to believe that the above represent only one family, especially when considering the probable age of Elizabeth and the following burials in Ellastone:-

30 Jul 1759   Elizabeth CLARK
17 Oct 1768  Elizabeth CLARK, wife of Thomas

but I cannot find another Thomas & Elizabeth marriage between 1759 and 1773.

There is a strong possibility that this is Thomas's burial:-

29 Feb 1784  bur of Thomas CLARKE, aged 88, in Ellastone

and this is the burial of his second wife (if he had one):-

25 Jun 1826  bur of Elizabeth CLARK, aged 67, in Norbury

I am confused; can anyone help, please?

England / Cross-border research
« on: Monday 05 June 23 09:38 BST (UK)  »
I am looking into a family which, in the late 18th century, lived near the Derbs/Staffs border, and used the services of parishes in both counties. Do I post my queries separately in each, or is there a preferred way of tackling this problem?

Derbyshire / Charles GREGORY ca 1700
« on: Tuesday 09 May 23 17:57 BST (UK)  »
Charles GREGORY baptized 4 children in Stanton by Bridge:-

21 Feb 1697   Mary
12 Apr 1702   Sarah
26 Feb 1706   Elizabeth
20 Feb 1710   John

I can't find the mother's name, nor a marriage. I've found a couple of possibles (London and Newbury), but I think they're 'non-runners'. If anyone can help, I should be most grateful.

Glamorganshire / Alice DAVID, late 18th century
« on: Sunday 09 April 23 11:54 BST (UK)  »
Alice DAVID was bap in Cadoxton juxta Neath on 23 Jul 1797, father John. Who was her mother?

Between 1787 and 1797 I have located 15 marriages in that area with a groom named John DAVID, so I've looked for the names of any daughters of Alice, (m William FRANCIS in 1816), and census data has yielded details of 6 children in all:-

William    ca  1816
Mary       ca  1819
Hannah   ca  1821
Jonah     ca   1826
Matthew ca   1831
Sarah     ca   1831

Interestingly, I've only been able to find a baptism for William.

Of the aforementioned marriages, 3 brides were named Mary, two were Sarah but there is no Hannah.

Best of all was the marriage between John DAVID and Alice DAVID, but, as this occurred two weeks after the baptism of 'my' Alice, I think I'll have to ignore it.

Any help with sorting this lot will be much appreciated.

Glamorganshire / Port Eynon and FindMyPast
« on: Thursday 30 March 23 12:57 BST (UK)  »
I have had difficulty finding events in Port Eynon on FindMyPast as there seemed to be large gaps in the records. Recently, quite by accident, I found what I wanted but the location was transcribed as 'Ort Eynon'. Further probing revealed that this was not an isolated incident, so I reported it to FindMyPast. To date, they have found over 1000 instances of this error, and they are in the process of making corrections which, they state, 'will take some time'.

If you've had problems with Port Eynon and FindMyPast, it might be worth having another look in a few days time.

Glamorganshire / William PHILLIP ca 1757
« on: Thursday 16 March 23 16:46 GMT (UK)  »
William PHILLIP was bap 24 Aug 1757 in Port Eynon, father John

Who was his mother? I have 2 options:-

25 Jan 1756  John PHILLIPS  m  Elizabeth JENKINS  in Llangennith (on FindMyPast)

26 Mar 1754  John PHILLIP (weaver) m Margaret GWYNN (widow) in Llanrhidian (Margaret Phillips collection of Llanrhidian Deeds)

Can anyone help me select which of these is 'mine' please?

William named one of his daughters 'Elizabeth', which might have been after his mother, but that was also the name of his mother-in-law.

Glamorganshire / John DAVID ca 1795
« on: Monday 13 March 23 14:31 GMT (UK)  »
Alice DAVID was bap 23 Jul 1797 in Cadoxton-juxta-Neath, father John DAVID.

Who was her mother?

There's a good handful of possible marriages in and around Cadoxton prior to Alice's baptism, but I can't home-in on any one of them. Can anyone help, please?

Carmarthenshire / John ANTHONY ca 1750
« on: Wednesday 08 March 23 17:37 GMT (UK)  »
Mary ANTHONY was bap in Llanedi on 20 Feb 1758, father John, no mother’s name. The only marriage I can find, which is anywhere near in both time and location is:-

Llanon   16 Mar 1757   John ANTHONY  m  Elizabeth WILLIAM

A search for possible children yielded:-

26 Jun 1756   Ann
20 Feb 1758   Mary
31 Jul 1761    John
26 Aug 1765   William
17 Jun  1772  Margaret
23 Feb 1774  Edward
26 Feb 1780  Ebenezer   mother  Ann
03 Nov 1782  Isaac          do   Ann

There is a marriage of John ANTHONY (widower) to Anne GRIFFITH (spinster) in Llangendeirne (sic) on 21 Feb 1772, but I can find no burial of Elizabeth ANTHONY between 1765 and 1772.

Was Ann really baptized 9 months before John & Elizabeth married?
When did Elizabeth die?
What else am I missing?

Any help would be much appreciated.
