Shropshire / Clarke family records Claverley
« on: Monday 21 February 11 19:55 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find out more information on the parents of Richard Clarke born/baptised  16 April 1780, Claverley, his parents and siblings were:-

Father: Thomas Clarke born about 1750. Buried - 28 March 1782, Claverley.
Mother: Mary born about 1754.

·   Mary – 24 March 1776
·   Patty – 2 April 1778 (1778)
02 Apr 1778 Patty, d. of Thomas & Mary [Elizabeth] Clarke (bur. 12 Apr 1778 ) bap. Book: [Marriages, 1774-1795.] (Marriage) Collection: Shropshire: Calverley - Parish Registers, Hereford Diocese

NB: Separate IGI entries show same date for Birth & Baptism.

Another record for a Richard born about 1781, spouse Esther, they are on the 1841 census in Claverley and are not connected to this enquiry.

Although the IGI record shows Thomas born Claverley about 1750 no baptism recorded for him but there are a few others around that date elsewhere in Shropshire. There are numerous others throughout England between 1749 & 1752, including Tanworth about 1749 and he is not the one.

I am trying to link Richard to my own Clarke ancestors from Tanworth in Arden in Warwickshire. My Great X 3 Grandfather Joseph born 1788 & Richard were partners in Birmingham during the early 1800s. I am trying to establish if they were related. I have all the later details from 1801 onwards.

If anyone could possible check the birth/baptism records in Claverley or find a marriage record, in Shropshire for Thomas & Mary about 1775, I was hoping to discover if Thomas was originally from Shropshire or maybe his occupation.

Anything from the OPR might help.

Thanks in anticipation.

Antrim / Kyle & Kell
« on: Sunday 12 December 10 19:52 GMT (UK)  »
I have been researching my Wife's Kyle Ancestors for some years. I traced her G/F Thomas Kyle (About 1853 Antrim - 1909, Ayrshire) some years ago and discovered his parents were John Kyle & Elizabeth Agnew.
Recently we have discovered a hand written family tree which shows the above John as Kell and their children as a mixture of Kell & Kyle, family rumour now suggests (after the document appeared) the name was changed.
All of their children were listed on the tree except two, one was added in later years and the other when yesterday I found the last will of John Kell a Farmer in Buckna. He died in 1870 but the will must have been contested because probate was given in 1896.
Through the 1901/1911 census and some other records I have managed to track down most of their children who were born between about 1840 & 1855, they were as follows but not in any particular order and the surname varied on different records. The ones I have emboldened I know very little about the others I have some detail but I would be interested if this family is recognised by anyone.
Jane or Janet, Robert, , George, Archibald, William James, Elizabeth, Margaret, Thomas &  Alexander.
George was probably the eldest son as he inherited the Farm, his brother Archibald was with him in 1901/1911, both single. Elizabeth went to Australia and married James Alford. Margaret went to Scotland and married Charles McKeown. Thomas a Tailor married twice before moving to Scotland.
Jane or Janet married John Morrow, his son was Thomas Alexander Morrow.
Alexander Kell or Kyle was a railway clerk in Belfast, he married Caroline Harper and died in 1925.

Warwickshire / Orton
« on: Friday 01 October 10 18:38 BST (UK)  »
I have be researching my Mothers Orton/Oreton family for some years.
So far I am back to Robert born about 1714. He married Elizabrth Bragg in 1739, Sheldon, which was then in Warwickshire.
They had 8 children all born Sheldon, their marriage OPR states that Elizabeth was born Sheldon but Robert was resident in Berkswell, it implies he was born elsewhere, it would be nice to know, can anyone help, I have now exhausted most online possiblities. I live in Scotland so local research is restricted.

I had a theory that he may have descended from William Orton Rector of Sheldon in 1628. He had three sons who went into the Church. John, Curate, Harborne, James, Curate, Edgbaston then Deacon in Lichfield and the most likely Phillip, Vicar of Bickenhill 1665-1694. He had one unamed son in 1660 and Phillip in 1662.
He married Sarah Spicer 1692 Warwickshire, She was born Cadeby, Leics 1663.
Children born Bickenhill: Anne 1693, Sarah 1695 buried Leics 1753, Mary 1696, Elizabeth 1697,
Phillip 1699 died 1701, Martha  1700 & Thomas 1709.

So was Robert 1714 a late child and he never made it to IGI or is there another explanation?

Subsequent generations meandered through Warwickshire eventually to Birmingham via Solihull and Hampton in Arden.
In the late 1800s early 1900s the family owned/occupied Walford Hall & the Farm, they were Butchers in Hampton, Meriden & Birmingham. Related family names Lowe & Wagstaff owned The Engine Inn at Hampton & the Black Bull Barston and the Rawbone family were Blacksmiths.
If this information is of interest to anyone please let me know. I will be happy to share what I have.

Canada Lookup Requests Completed / Lawless or Armstrong Descendants
« on: Sunday 29 August 10 17:18 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to locate descendants of William (21/6/1882) and John (22/5/1884) LAWLESS both were born in Birmingham, England. They were sent to Canada by their Mother Mary Jane Lawless. They were among a party of 72 boys & 19 girls from the Middlemore Homes in Birmingham who arrived in Nova Scotia on 3/6/1893 and were first settled in New Brunswick.

My Mother Mary Jane Clarke, nee Orton, was their Niece. My Mother died in 1990 but was in contact over the years with Mary Jean (Polly) Armstrong, last address Nepean, Ontario and G Armstrong, Ottawa, Ontario. I believe they were possibly her cousins but not sure. I never asked!!!

It is a bit of a longshot but does any of the above information ring a bell with anyone?

Leicestershire Lookup Requests / Earl Shilton - Briggs/Bown
« on: Friday 27 August 10 11:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I wonder if anyone could possibly check a marriage record Earl Shilton 1/11/1785.

According to IGI Benjamin Briggs married Ann Bown. I was hoping that there may be some reference to Benjamins Parish or Witnesses.
Anything extra may help.

Regards
Colin
