Hi all, I have just received the death cert. of Johann Karl Ludwig(Louis)Degenhardt from Vic. and it is extremely hard to read but does offer the following. The death was registered by G Degenhardt, brother. As to the question of his wife, he was married (and this is extremely difficult to read) in Praunschveria(?) Germany aged 26 to Carolina CODDE. His children were Minna age 45, Anna age 44, Robert & Louis twins age 41 and Betty dead. Now interestingly, there is a X next to Carolina's name and in the column there is a notation which reads:Codde in column 12 ...read COTTE. This well and truly proves that Johann is definately Louis and he did come out on the George Washington.  But how did Hamster change to Cotte?  Help!!

Hi Kris, Yes it is possible that both girls were on the ship. Elizabeth may have been the older unnamed 18 year old and if the unnamed 13 year old was Lina, she would have been 18 in 1854 when she gave birth to Robert Degenhardt.  Louis may have had a relationship with the Hamster girl first and then Lina later.  But it is possible.

Hi, just back from the Library with news. On 1895 Vic BDM death of Louis shows as: Johann Karl Ludwig Degnhardt, age 71. Father's name Karl. Mother's name Frederica Lather.  There is also an 1893 entry for Johann Heinrich Freidrich Degenhardt age 72, Father Carl and mother Freidericke Lader.  I think that we can safely assume that these two are brothers and that Johann Karl Ludwig is the 24 year old aboard the George Washington.  I can find no further refs to Fredricke Hamster.  Hold the bus, you sent me some earlier info on Degenhardt Luis arrived by 1853 residence Kensington.  Have another look at that.  Is Caroline nee Amstor really Fredricke Caroline Hamster? and is Salina, his 2nd wife really the Lina that we have been looking for?  Where did you get that snippet of info and do you have any more info on her?
Interestingly too, there was a Johann Carl Ludwig Degenhardt aged 18, who came out on the Heerjeebhoy Rustomjee Patel, three years ealier in 1846. At a stretch, is it possible that he came out and went back for the rest of the family?

Hi
I have just had a look at the Ships List for the George Washington. Listed as a single woman is Fredricke Caroline (Lina) Hamster.  So this may have been an earlier marriage, or did the name somehow morph into Kotte?

Thanks for the info.  I can also find Minna Caroline Degenhardt born 4/9/1849. Her father was Louis Degenhardt and her mother was Frederika Caroline HAMSTER. I wonder if this was an earlier marriage? Is this Louis one of the boys who came over on the George Washington?  In a list of Germans who resied in Burra in 1851, there are several Degenhardts, including one listd as LOVIS DEGENHARDT.  I do know that a few of the Degenhardts moved to Murtoa so I must get onto VIC BDM

Hi I am new to RootChat, but I think that I am also a descentdant of this family.  My Gt Grandfather was William Charles Degenhardt born 2 July 1882.  His father was Robert, born May 1854. Robert's father was a Louis Degenhardt who was married to Lina Kotte.  I think that Louis is a descendant of the family who came out on the George Washington.  If you or anyone else can help me with information on Louis Background or any information regarding William, I would be really grateful.  I do know that William was married twice and changed his name to Fisher in about 1930, but I have not been able to find any death records of either name.
