The Harold Norman WEST mentioned is my person of interest, he is my husband's grandfather.  The child mentioned in the first article as having been a ward of the state, is very likely my mother in law, who was put in a home at the age of 4. Her mother was Frances Florence May WEST nee HERBERT who died when my mother in law was 4.  I did know about the 2nd article, but not about the maintainence situation, but don't think that the rest of the family do.
I would like to find more ancestral evidence of this side of the family, but am fast coming to the conclusion that Harold's father being a surgeon may well have been a furphy!
Still, all grist to the genealogy mill.  All information will be gratefully accepted.

Hi Jamjar
The information about Harold's birthplace being Mt Gambier comes from his marriage certificate.  He says that his father is Edward James WEST, Surgeon, and that his mother was Elizabeth Mary LINDSAY.
I have tried the MT Gambier Historical Society and they can find no trace of Harold or his father.  I can find no trace of Edward (unless I send away for countless death certificates!), even through registers of Surgeons practising at that time.  I really do think that Harold was born elsewhere and may have moved to Mt Gambier as a small child.  But this particular side of the WEST family are proving illusive.

Thanks Julie

Hi All
Has anyone come across Elizabeth Mary LINDSAY or possibly Mary Elizabeth LINDSAY?   She is listed as the mother of one of my ancestors, Harold Norman Lee (Lindsay) WEST, and may have been married to his father Edward James WEST.   Harold has given his birthplace as Mount Gambier in SA, but I haven't been able to find any trace of him or his parents rounds that area.  I am trying to get information on both the WEST side and the LINDSAY families.  They may not have come from SA and possibly not even Australia. Harold was born 1887 so possible marriage would be around that time.

Any help out there?

Julie

Hi All
From the information that I have been given, the birth year for Harold was 1887.

I have sent an e-mail to the Mt Gambier Historical Society asking if they have an details on Harold or his father, Edward.  I thought that maybe if Edward was a surgeon there might be some sort of record.  Apparently, at the time, Mt Gambier was quite a big town.

Will keep you all posted

Hi All,

I have had a quick look at Vic BDM and nothing is coming up on their online service.
Yes, Tedscout, he did go to WA.

Sorry Tedscout
I just realised that I was having a "moment".  Of course the Edward that you were talking about is the same Edward and is Harold's son.

Blame it on a late night when I read your post.

Boy, do I feel dumb!

Hi Kris
Yes, Edward NL West was Harold's son and was known as "Woodsy".

I have ordered a copy of Eugene Herbert's book about the Herbert family and I am hoping that that might shed some light on on the birth details of Harold.

If that fails, I will order a vopy of his second marriage certificate and hope that gives me what I am looking for.

I am beginning to suspect that he may have been born overseas and just lived in SA.

Interesting that Tedscout's Edward West had a mother with the maiden name Herbert, as my Harold NL West married a Frances Florence May Herbert in WA in 1914.  I agree that there is likely to be a family connection there.

Muss, thanks for the info, this is the right HNL West.  I am thinking that I may have to apply for his marriage cert. to get more information.  Apparently the WA marriage certs give quite a lot of information.

There is an Edward West who died in South Aust. in 1926 and I am fairly sure from the family notes that I have that this is the father of HNL West.

Once again you guys are all the best!

Hi all
Has anyone got any information regarding the family of Harold Norman Lee WEST.

I know that remarried in WA in 1914 and again in about 1928, but I was hoping for some information relating to his family.  I am fairly sure that his father was Edward but I don't any more than that.

Any information will be gratefully received.
