Gloucestershire / Waterdale Southmead Road
« on: Friday 06 November 20 13:12 GMT (UK)  »
These were pictures were found in my late mother-in-laws photo album. Probably some relation or family connection but beyond that I have no idea. Waterdale is a substantial house so I was wondering if anyone knew it and the family that lived there. Photos look about 1920. The photos have written on the back "Waterdale" at the corner of Southmead Road and Henlease (sic) Road. I can see from Google that the house has long gone.

Gloucestershire / Bird and Power families of Bristol

Is anybody researching or descended from the Bird or Power families of Bristol? Birds were originally from Abbots Leigh but lived in Bedminster. Powers were originally from Suffolk. There is also a Cardiff connection.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: DNA match

Hi brigidmac

One example is one of my dna/cousin matches is a 15cm.2 and looking at his tree it is more or less fully in Denbighshire, Wales. Jones being the most common connection is suggested as the link and it is also my surname. I had come to a brick wall in c.1800 (which isn't bad for Joneses in Wales to be honest) ;D. So I set about trying to confirm that there could be a connection. Nothing popped up as obvious (mainly because locations were fairly distant to where my family were). So I though rather than spend too much time up a blind alley I thought if he shares his dna match with another of my 3rd cousins, who I know  100% is related then that would prove I was on the right track. However he has come back and said no, and that cousin isn't in his list of dna/cousin matches at all.

Which means he must be related somewhere else in my tree, but which line?

Thanks everyone for the very comprehensive replies. I not tried the colour thing so will keep it in mind. I guess some people have their dna done because it was a present to get their ethnicity but have only a superficial interest or a bit social-media phobic which is understandable.
I’m at the stage where if I can’t get a direct link to someones tree I try to create scenarios and jump a generation and work back. It has worked on two occasions.
Also (you may have noticed this) I have made a connection to another tree only to see the mistakes I made a long time ago have been recreated in theirs. Which suggests lazy research afoot.
Thanks again

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / DNA match

For those who have used the Ancestry DNA test. I have the following query. With the list of cousin matches you get, is there a simple way of grouping them into family lineage? I message many but not many reply. For example, if I’m trying to establish a connection to a specific family branch of a matched cousin (that I haven’t worked out yet as that part of the tree hasn’t been explored). Sould other known family matched cousins have  the same dna connections?
Hope that makes sense.

Thanks Beatle

Thanks so much HMac and seaweed!

That is simply amazing I never knew of his maritime connection, only that his younger brother served in the Royal Navy during WWI on the Marlborough and Hood amongst others.

As you rightly point out there isn't definitive proof. If he did server on the Ardmore he would have been only 14. But the MM Medal comment on his medal index card is tantalising!

Also thanks to MaxD and SaunJ for taking up the challenge.

Thanks MaxD

The Merchant Marine Medal is totally unexpected. No one has ever said anything about it.

Thanks ShaunJ, they are the ones I got a few days ago. They definitely confirm they are the correct documents because of the known addresses. :)

Thanks so much guys very interesting replies.

I did notice the medal award but couldn't quite make out the bit before medal. Seems an odd award for a soldier to me.

I know his job from family sources was to lay telegraph wires in the trenches so the note about him not going overseas is also curious.

He lived in Cork until the war ended. So Connaught is very doubtful, I would have thought Munster be more likely.

I also have a photo of him in his hospital blues so he must have been injured at some point although not found any record of it yet.

Thanks again Beatle
