Suffolk / Marriage information at St. Mary's, Bury St. Edmunds
« on: Tuesday 10 January 06 20:33 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for my great-great-grandparents, James Graves and Martha Scates who were married at St. Mary's on January 2, 1826.  They had at least 10 children and lived at Whiting Street, Bury St. Edmunds.  However, I can find no parents for James and Martha.  Does anybody have access to the records of St. Mary's?

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Re: Joseph Arkell in 1841 Fairford

I still do not know what happened to Mary Ann Arkell, Joseph's wife in 1851.  Was she in the census for that year?  Could you check for me please.  In 1861 she ended up in Islington, but never remarried.

I suspect that Joseph had relatives in Gloucestershire and that is why the couple returned before 1841; they had been married in London in 1836.  Were there anymore Arkells in the Fairford area?

Yours truly,
Peter Arkell

Thank you very much for looking up the Gladston family.  These are indeed the right people.
In view of all the accidents that happened in the coal mines, how were people enticed to go down the pits.

Northumberland Lookup Requests / Border Marriages in the 1800s

Could somebody look up the marriage of my great great grandparents William and Jane Purves in or before 1846.  They lived in the Ord Mill area of Tweedmouth.
Also looking for the marriage of my great-grandparents Alexander and Mary Gladston around 1851.  They lived in and came from Spittal.  All these people were Presbyterians and so could have got married at one of the places on the Scottish border such as Lamberton Toll or Gretna Green.

I am trying to establish the origins of my great great grandfather, James Gladston who was born in Belford in 1783.  Could somebody look up Scremerston Colliery in the 1851 census to see if there was a Margaret and an Isabella living there.  They were the children of John Gladstone and Phyllis Richardson.

Hello:

My great great grandfather, James Gladston had at least four children including Alexander Gladston born 1825 (my great-grandfather) and Jane Gladston, born 1828.  Jane had some trouble keeping her underwear on and gave birth to at least five children with no apparent father.  One of the children was another Jane Gladston, born 1856; she married John Ainslie on October 2, 1876 in the Berwick registry office.

They had at least five children according to the 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses.  These were Jane, born 1880, James, born 1882, Elizth Ann, born 1885, John born 1887 and Alexander born 1889.  From the censuses they lived at 20 West St. in 1881, 28 Main St. in 1891 and 52 Middle St in 1901.  All these houses were in Spittal.

The census data all came from ancestry.co.uk.  I have a picture of the Jane who was born in 1880.  She is about 30 in the photograph.  If you wish I can e-mail this picture on to you.
