Warwickshire / Shops at top of Tessall Lane, Northfield
« on: Thursday 09 March 06 15:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Looking for information about shops at the top of Tessall Lane, Northfield.  On the other side of the road was the links golf course.

My paternal grandparents lived in Tessall Lane in the 1940's/50's, at the top end of Tessall Lane my great aunt and uncle had a grocery shop.  I can still picture it now - Arkwright's in Open All Hours reminds me, very much, of this with the vegetables outside, tin baths hanging up!

I can picture my great uncle Ted using the bacon slicer, it's a wonder he had any fingers left!

Does anyone know of any photographs of the area that would show the shop?

Herefordshire / Snipes Nest - Stanford Bishop
« on: Monday 20 February 06 17:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Looking for information about a house called Snipes Nest, Stanford Bishop.

My ggggrandfather was James Mitton, in Kelly's Directory 1858, he is listed as a Shopkeeper, Snipe's Nest, Stanford Bishop.

In 1871 James Mitton is at Brick House, Stanford Bishop

Does anyone know these houses and if they are still standing?

Timewatch BBC2 9.00 pm Friday 3rd February

The story of the Lady Juliana, which set sail in 1789 for Australia with the first cargo of female prisoners.

Sounds like a good watch   ;)

Googling Lady Juliana tells more about the programme.

Northamptonshire / Information on Sulby Lodge
« on: Sunday 16 October 05 21:36 BST (UK)  »
Does anybody know anything about Sulby Lodge near Welford?

My 3xggrandfather, William Linnell (1805), was a farmer at Sulby Lodge, (source 1854 PO Directory).  His son George was there in later years (census info).

On the 1871 census in the column for address is the word "Supressed", anyone know why?

Was Sulby Lodge part of a big estate?  To whom did it belong?

Does Sulby Lodge still exist?

I am intrigued, any information would be much appreciated

Susan  ;D
