Armed Forces / Re: John Girdlestone Wright Service Record

Thanks ever so much for that information. I didn’t have a clue what rank he was so that was very helpful 🙂.

His date of birth is definitely 20th November 1891 as I have his birth certificate.

Thanks again for looking 🙂

Armed Forces / John Girdlestone Wright Service Record
« on: Tuesday 22 October 19 22:28 BST (UK)  »
My great grandad was in the Royal Engineers during WW1, he was one of the lucky ones who survived. I have unsurprisingly been able to find a service or pension record for him, I am assuming due to the records being destroyed in WW2.
I have trawled the medal rolls and there is one that has come up that could be him but maybe not. His name was John Girdlestone Wright and he was born in 1891 in North Walsham, Norfolk. The record I have found is for a John G Wright- Transport 2nd Corporal- Regimental Number: 23881.
There is noone alive in my family now who could confirm whether this is him or not. Is there anywhere else I could go for any further information?. I have a picture of Great Grandad which I have attached, if someone could maybe make out what rank he was, that would be a great help. I have noticed he has three chevrons on his arm but I am not sure what that represents. Thanks ever so much for any help you can give me. i know the service record is a lost cause but I thought if I could find him in the medal rolls and find a battalion, I may be able to find war diaries. Thanks again

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / What profession? *completed many thanks*
« on: Monday 26 August 19 17:04 BST (UK)  »
Just wondering if anyone had any ideas what my relations profession is listed as on the 1901 census. She was visiting a house in London at the time but it appears the enumerator has put a cross through each profession entry on that sheet so I am having a hard time making it out.

Many thanks!

Norfolk Lookup Requests / Re: Alice Elizabeth Bullock
« on: Tuesday 20 August 19 09:35 BST (UK)  »
Many thanks for that, I have had a look at the death entry and I think that is for the Alice Bullock who was born in Lound, Suffolk living in Gorleston in 1901. I did have that death entry in my shoebox on Ancestry so I must have stumbled across that before even though I can’t remember doing so 🙂

In 1901 I have my relation Alice working as a servant in Aylsham for a lady called Rosa E Dale.

Norfolk Lookup Requests / Alice Elizabeth Bullock
« on: Monday 19 August 19 22:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I wonder if you can help.. I have a relation called Alice Elizabeth Bullock born 1882 in Banningham, Norfolk and I have hit a brick wall with her.. I can find her up until 1901 when she was working as a servant in Aylsham but after that I have struggled. Just wondering whether anybody would be able to find her in the 1911 census or the 1939 register or maybe she married or died before 1911.. I am at a loss! Thanks ever so much for any help 🙂

World War Two / War Diaries question
« on: Friday 31 May 19 11:18 BST (UK)  »
I received my latest addition of WDYTYA magazine today and there was a section on D-Day and WW2 military records.. In this article, it said how to order WW2 military records and mentioned war diaries.. my question is this. I have a relation who was in the Lincolnshire Regiment who died in a battle following D-Day called Operation Charnwood.. I have his military records and I have visited his grave in Ranville War Cemetery.. I have looked on the National Archives page and they do have diaries for the Lincolnshire Regiment.. Realistically what are the chances these war diaries will tell me something I don’t already know? I did some volunteer work transcribing WW1 diaries once, are the WW2 diaries similar? Many thanks.

Norfolk / Lingwood Poor Law Institution
« on: Sunday 13 May 18 22:23 BST (UK)  »
I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about the Lingwood Poor Law Institution? I have just found my great great grandfather Abraham Burgess there on the 1939 register as a patient. Is this and Blofield Workhouse one and the same as when I search for the institution, Blofield Workhouse keeps popping up.
Many thanks!
