Channel Islands Lookup Requests / Re: Seeking PULSEVER / PUSLIFER (Huguenot name?)

Hi Carole, thank you for having a go.
The censuses you were looking at will be post 1841??

I think that if these people were ever in the CI then it is likely they left a few hundred years earlier - I imagine they might show up on Tudor docs perhaps??

To be honest I am clutching at straws a bit and I have no idea what  paperwork might remain in CI that could be looked at !!

Best wishes, mowsehowse.

Thank you for taking the time to reply, but I made an enquiry in January to the Brixham Heritage Museum and had a message from them which says they do NOT hold the Hearth Tax returns.

Devon / When a ROWSE became BEEDLE
« on: Sunday 20 February 11 20:15 GMT (UK)  »
In 1778 Grace Rowse gave birth to a son (illeg) in Totnes.  I have yet to find a record of Grace's birth place or baptism.

The married father admitted to his transgression, and a few months later in March 1779, Grace Rowse married a Henry Beedle by special licence, and disappeared, leaving the baby in parish care.

I have searched the special licence collection held at the DRO, but of course this one is not there!!

Where did Grace and Henry go?  I cannot find them - the only thing I DO know is they are NOT related to the Beedles of Tiverton.

Can anyone help??   ::)

Channel Islands Lookup Requests / Seeking PULSEVER / PUSLIFER (Huguenot name?)
« on: Sunday 20 February 11 16:28 GMT (UK)  »
I have a marriage for the name PULSEVER / PULSIFER in Brixham, Devon in 1752.
Digging around it seems this is thought to be a Huguenot name, and the suggestion is the family may have gone to Devon from Guernsey (in the Channel Islands).
Has anyone noticed this name in Guernsey or the Channel Islands at all?
I'll be very grateful for any response, many thanks.

Devon / Hearth Tax returns for Brixham (Devon)
« on: Sunday 20 February 11 15:58 GMT (UK)  »
I would like to look at the Hearth Tax returns for Brixham, and I have found out I could pay lots of money to get copies from the National Archive, but does anyone know if they are indexed somewhere, maybe at the DRO ( ? ) or even on-line anywhere?
Thank you.

Thank you for that Nell,
the extract was cut & paste off the internet.
Definitely old, and not very pure French.
 Here is the link:   http://dunhamwilcox.net/me/me_bio_pulsifer.htm
Will be glad to know if you have any more thoughts,  I have been wrestling for a few days.

I tried that myself, and came to the same conclusion, but many thanks for having a go.   :-*

I found the following extract in "The Genealogical and Family History of the STATE OF MAINE, vol lll"
For the name PULSEVER/PULSIFER.....

Recalling rusty school-girl French I have made a stab at translating it, and I have also trawled the web for symbolic meaning, but is there a heraldry expert willing to give me an educated overview please??    ::)
