Armed Forces / Who would benefit from these war books/photos
« on: Saturday 15 April 17 22:41 BST (UK)  »
A friend was recently widowed and in conversation she mentioned that her husband had a number of albums of photos he had taken of ?? war graves around the country.  He also had a collection of books "all things war" as she put it.

She travelled a lot for her work and he accompanied her.  He would then go off to whatever cemetery was in the area and spend time taking photos.

She doesn't know what to do with the albums/books but has no desire to keep them as they have no interest for her.

I haven't actually seen any of the albums or books so am unsure of the exact nature of the photos but as his interest was in the war - I am pretty sure the photos would only be of war graves

If anybody has any ideas or interest - could you pm me and I will ask her for further details

United States of America / Sarah Carlin b 1866 Liverpool England
« on: Tuesday 27 September 16 01:27 BST (UK)  »
Can anybody find any info about this ancestor in the USA (possibly Kentucky)

Sarah Carlin (no  middle name) was born 22.6.1866 in Liverpool - her parents Matthew & Jane (nee King) both born Ireland were my great grandparents.

I have her up to the 1881 census then nothing.  Over the years I have checked all possible marriages and deaths between 1881-1891 and afterwards without success.

Back in 2001 I was contacted by an American lady from Kentucky  who seemed to be connected to this branch of the family and told me that Sarah and her married sister Martha plus Martha's daughter had emigrated to the USA.

Sarah allegedly married a Cherokee Indian and Martha  "shacked up" with another man who may have been English and whose surname was “Smith”.  She also gave me a great deal of info about Martha’s daughter “Ellen”.  When I tried to contact her again a couple of years ago, her email address was no longer valid.

Martha Ann Carlin only married in 1900 to James Michael McDonald. In 1911 is living with another of her sisters and shown as having no children.  Martha died in 1915 so I now have doubts about the info given about Sarah.

Sarah’s eldest brother William J (not known what the J stands for)  b 1853 Ireland disappears after the 1871 census and is rumoured to have emigrated to the USA but I have not found anything to support that.

Her brother in law William Toft went to Philadelphia and died there on 16.9.1886 from Typhoid.  His wife had given birth in England on 10.8.1886 so it’s possible there is a USA connection with Sarah & William.

Technical Help / Ancestry & Google problems on AOL
« on: Saturday 23 January 16 23:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I thought these problems may correct themselves so have held on in blind hope but they are now getting to be a nuisance.  Can anybody offer any help/advice to get them working properly?

Google

For a few weeks now, when I put a question into Google and click on the search icon - nothing happens.  I then have to right click on my mouse and select reload.  All the hits appear but the "question box" disappears.

I can't just right click on reload at the outset as it flips me back to the question box and deletes what I had put there.   I have to go through the usual search process first or it won't work at all

If I use Google via Firefox - no problem

Ancestry

For the past week I have been unable to get the search page up on anything on Ancestry.  I have everything stored as "Quick Links" on Ancestry so just click on the link but now I get a "Source Information" page instead of the input page

If I access Ancestry from Firefox - no problem

These are the only 2 sites I am having problems with - everything else works as normal

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Missing 1881 entry for Dean family in Liverpool
« on: Monday 20 October 14 23:12 BST (UK)  »
Please note that I have everything else for this family – it’s just the 1881 that’s a problem.

This is the FH of a friend who will be 100yrs old in February.  I have done every search possible including FS plus the Scottish and Welsh 1881 census.

If anybody finds them – they have my undying gratitude and the noise you hear will be the gun to my head because I failed ;D

I am looking for Mary Ann Dean (nee Marsden) born Liverpool 1859
Her son Walter Dean born Liverpool 1879 (ish) see below
Her son John Marsden Dean born November 1880 Liverpool (birth reg March 1881) - my friends father

It would be an added bonus if her husband Henry Dean was with them because apart from his name/birthyear and his father was William (a blacksmith) I haven’t a clue about him.  However,  being a mariner he may have been at sea.

Background

23 .9.1878 Liverpool - Mary Ann Marsden aged 18 born Liverpool  married Henry Dean aged 19 a mariner b 1858/59.

By 1882 Henry was dead and Mary Ann had re-married to Clifford Tomlinson.  1891 census shows
stepson John M Dean living with them but the 1901 entry also shows a son Walter Dean aged 21.  I     then found Walter in 1891 living with his maternal grandmother Emma (Marsden) and her new husband David Morris.

There is a December 1878 birth reg on freebmd for a Walter Dean which may be him but there is another Walter Dean aged 2yrs on the 1881 belonging to a different family.  There is only one Walter Dean birth reg 1878-1880 in Liverpool.  I also checked for a birth under Marsden in view of his birthyear being the same year as the marriage.

I have checked Clifford Tomlinson in 1881 in case they were living together and I have searched under Marsden as well.
