Northamptonshire / Help! Where next?? John Archer abt 1742
« on: Wednesday 05 September 12 14:52 BST (UK)  »
Hello, have posted this on the Leics board too so apologies if you see it twice.

Hello

Am trying to track down a John Archer, born abt 1742 presumably somewhere around the villages of the Northants / Leics border.

I have him marrying by licence a Mary Burdett in Theddingworth, Leics in 1763, and then children from 1764 -1776 (Hezekiah 1764, Thomas 1766, John 1771, Mary 1773 and Elisha 1776) in Crick, Northants. He is on the Northants 1777 militia list in Crick with 4 children  and so exempt. Mary dies in childbirth in 1776 in Crick.

Am a bit stumped as where to search next. I am not local and travel restricted so record office is no go at the moment.

Ideas so far:

* Look for early militia lists for 1760-1764 to see if he is listed which would give a clue as to which registers to look at. I have found that the Leics Militia were in action in 1760 and 1761 but have not been able to trace any lists for that period so have emailed the record office. Have checked the 1762 Northants lists on Alan Clarke's site but no luck there.

There is a train if thought which has him as the child of Hezekiah & Elizabeth Archer in East Haddon, presumably due to the name of his first born. But have asked record office to search both the parish records and BTs for East Haddon and no John is listed, yet 6 other children are. Hezekiah snr dies and is buried in East Haddon in 1743 so to my mind if he was John's father then the parish records would show his baptism as the family stayed in the area.

* Look for a second marriage (he was c34 and with 4 children when his first wife dies, with the youngest child just 3) which would hopefully give me either better info on the parish record?

* Look for a death (presumably in the parish of a second marriage or nearby) to see if this gives an age or other information. His year of birth is based on his marriage licence which could be incorrect or falsified.

* Track down where all his kids ended up (so far I just have my line) to see if he is in the parishes they married / had kids in.

Anyone know of any other resources which may help me? Does the above sound sensible? This is my main line (maiden name was Archer) and would really like to get back further.

Thanks for any advice.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / King family in Melling in Lonsdale
« on: Sunday 02 September 12 09:37 BST (UK)  »
Hello, just had a breakthrough on one of my brickwalls and have got back another generation. Wondering if someone would be kind enough to do a look up for me if they have access to the registers for Melling - the period I need is not on the IGI.

Am looking for the following:

Marriage of William King to Ann (surname unknown). Known children baptised in 1772 & 1774 (Henry & John) so presumably prior to that date.

Any King children baptised c1793 - 1806 with the father Henry King and the mother Ann (formerly Skirrow). Henry and Ann married in 1793 and I have one certain child James in 1804 and one potential William born abt 1806 (from 1841 cenus).

This last one is a big look up I know, so if too much just confirmation of William would be great. Appreciate any help at all, really pleased to get back another generation!

Cumberland / Parish Records Online?
« on: Friday 24 August 12 11:03 BST (UK)  »
Hello

Took a bit of a break from research the last 5 years as been busy making the next generation. Now they are growing older am finding I have some time and the bug has bitten me again. But goodness things have moved on in terms of record availability and am finding myself lost on google! Seems like every time I go to a site claiming to have parish records online they dont have decent Cumberland coverage.

My current interest is round the Wigton area and I know of the brilliant Cumberland Roots site, also have the Roland Grigg pdf. Specifically am looking for Bolton and Westward to chase down a couple of leads but the bits I need are not on the IGI. Does anyone know if they are available online and I have just missed them or is my best bet the Archive centre?

Thanks for any advice.

Cumberland Completed Lookups / 1841 Lookup for Richard Gate? COMPLETED Thank you
« on: Wednesday 22 August 12 20:28 BST (UK)  »
Hello

Would be very grateful if someone could help me out with one of my brick walls. Looking for the following if they were still alive:

Richard & Jane Gate

Jane Born 1772 so will be showing as 65 or 70? She was born in county (at Arthuret).

Richard's birth currently unknown but am guessing if he is still about will show as 70.

Should be in Longtown or Wigton area.  Grandchildren born in Holme Cultrum.

Thank you if you can help. Don't get to do much research nowadays but like to wobble the niggly ones now and then and just got some new info which leads me to this. Is still exciting!

Ireland / Is "Strong" an unusual forename?
« on: Sunday 22 January 12 11:38 GMT (UK)  »
Am trying to trace the birth and line of Strong Dinning, born abt 1760/1765 in Caledon Bridge, Tyrone.

Getting to grips with the records and am beginning to appreciate that I am looking for the surname Dinning, Denning, Dennin, Clendennin, Clendinnon etc etc.

Am however struggling with the forename, I have it on record in the Irish Flaxgrowers list of 1796, and then in records from Bristol after his emmigration so it is certain that this was the name he went by.

I can't however find records of anyone else with this forename and am beginning to wonder if it was a nickname or a derivitive of something. I would think not anglicised given the inclusion in the 1796 list, but am stumped.

Anyone any thoughts or come across the forename elsewhere? Would be grateful.

World War One / Help with Medal Card
« on: Friday 20 January 12 15:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, would be grateful for any help with the attached. Is an extract from my great grandfathers WW1 medal card. My dad has checked with the archives and looks as if his full records were lost, so this is all we have.

Am I right in thinking the following:

He joined up to the 2 Battalion of the Border Regiment, or is it 2nd division of 5 Battalion?
He then transferred at some point to the Royal Engineers.
He entered theatre of war on 14.12.15 in France.
He was discharged to Z ? Reserves on 21.2.19

Thanks very much indeed.

Moderator comment: image removed.  Only SMALL portions of such images may be posted , but only if the writing is difficult to decipher.

There is a good explanation of the notations used on medal cards and what they mean here:

Northamptonshire Lookup Requests / East Haddon BT Look Up?
« on: Friday 20 January 12 11:12 GMT (UK)  »
Anyone have access to the Bishops Transcripts for East Haddon and able to do a look up? I have a family am trying to make sense of and the Parish Registers are damaged in parts or at times almost illegible.

Am trying to locate the children of Hezekiah Archer & Elizabeth Wills. So far I have:

Hezekiah Archer - 4 Aug 1723
William Archer - 25 Dec 1724
Elizabeth Archer - May 1726, probably the 1st although not clear
James Archer - 13 or 15 or 18 Jun 1731
Francis Archer - 21 Mar 1732 or 1733 (or possibly Aug 1732)
Benjamin Wills Archer - 22 May 1738

I think there is likely to be another child around 1728 but records are too damaged.  The child I am really hoping to locate though is John Archer. John is my direct ancestor, his first born was Hezekiah and I have been given this family as his but would really like to verify it. He will have been born some time between 1738 - 1744. Most likely 1740 or 1742. There is no trace of him in the parish records, hopefully due to the damage.

Thanks in advance.

World War One / Help with WW1 Uniform - COuld be long shot
« on: Monday 13 November 06 15:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

My father and I believe that the gentleman in the attached photograph is my great grandfather.  He died in 1929 from bronchopneumonia / cerebral heamorrhage - possibly linked to mustard gas exposure during WW1.  We know very little about him as he was never spoken of by his children (am still trying to work out why!), all of whom have now passed on.

I'd love to try and track down info on his WW1 service for my father but will not be able to get down to the National Archives until next year.  I know the photograph shows very little but wondered if anyone could tell me if there is anything distinctive relating to his uniform that could help me track which regiment he served with.  He was from Whitehaven so chances are it will have been a Cumbrian / Lancashire regiment.

I appreciate this is a very long shot but would be grateful for any advice or pointers to good websites etc that could help me. I've attached a enlargement of the very fuzzy badge on his shoulder.

Thanks

Sue
