World War Two / Bdr Cyril H. Bowden; died 24 Jan 1945
« on: Thursday 07 May 20 09:01 BST (UK)  »
I have been contacted by a chap from Nederweert, Netherlands.
We are wondering whether any descendants or relatives of Cyril are out there.

Cyril Helmn Bowden was born 12 December 1915 in New Mills, Derbyshire.
When he died he was a member of 1 Battery, 15th (Isle of Man) Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery

Originally the 15th (IOM) Light AA were all from the Isle of Man, in 3 batteries; 41st, 42nd and 129 Battery.
The 129 Battery were on Crete in 1941 and virtually all of them were captured by the advancing Germans.
So, in 1942, the 1st Battery, the Senior Regular AA Battery of the British Army joined the Regiment to replace the 129 Battery.

My guess is that Cyril was in 1 Battery, before that was attached to the 15th (IOM) LAA.

May 4th is the Dutch Remembrance Day, and Cyril was honoured this week with a floral tribute.

Are there any relatives/descendants of Cyril who would like to be put in touch with my Dutch contact?

World War Two / 15th (Isle of Man) Light AA Regiment

Could I ask for some help, please?

The war diaries (transcribed at www.desertrats.org.uk) states the following for 24th January 1945:
One S.P. Gun and one 15 cwt truck brewed up in 1st Bty— result of enemy shelling one N.C.O. killed
What is the meaning of "brewed up"?

The chap I am looking for (Cyril Hamn Bowden) died on this day; presumably in the action mentioned?

Also, he wasn't Manx! Born in 1916 in Derbyshire, on the 1939 Register he is in New Mills U.D., Derbyshire.
When he signed up, would he have been simply allocated to a regiment short of numbers?

Armed Forces / Military Guard of Honour
« on: Sunday 19 April 20 11:54 BST (UK)  »
I have posted the original photo to the Photographic board, for dating.

But there looks to be a military guard of honour - any guesses as to the regiment?

The headgear could be a busby, and has a flash or hackle on the left-hand side?

This is a photo of the old railway station in Portishead, Somerset.

Can anyone enlighten me as to a date?
