Sussex / Franci(e)s Shorter . Burwash area

 I am hoping someone can help me with my mystery women Franci(e)s  Shorter .
 On 7 Nov 1823 in Burwash she marries John Pennells  a agr labourer and they live in the area till at least 1871. First at Key Lands ( sorry dont know what that means) and latter  at Barn House Burwash.
But on the census returns from 1841-1871 no location is given for her place of birth.--Just not known . I have not found a death record either . After Johns  death she is working as a char women.
Her age from the census returns suggest a birth  between 1807-1811 but of course these  could be wide of the mark.
 There are a few baptisms on Ancestry  in the Burwash area but the the dates dont really tally. Also a number of trees but the majority have  her as the daughter of a Charles and Sarah Shorter --but that family appear to  be well to do farmers in the Edenbridge area although Charles family are from Burwash.

It seems strange she didnt know from were she was born --could this suggest the workhouse ?

Interested in your views and if we can find a death record. Have only found 2 sons for her shown as Thomas b 1824 and Henry  Pennells 1829. Both stay in Burwash for most of their lives. Henry dies Cranbrook .

I hope someone with better eyes than me might be able to  work out what is on the Criminal Record sheet for William Burnett in 1804. Record on Ancestry. He was born 1776 in Kent but is tried in London on 11/4/1804. Sentence is death but i can read he was Pardoned but not why.

Hoping someone may be able to Help. The  family story is that  Mrs Jane Elizabeth Giles nee Baker was said to have run a guest house on the Iow after 1944 and before 1960. Born in 1889 she dies 21/6/1963 at Alver Bank Rd West London. She was widowed in 1940. We know she was living at 51 Stanmore Rd Stevenage in 1942 and at 7 Julian Rd Stevenage in 1944--both addresses taken from her will. Another address lived at was 71 Shirley Way Croydon sometime during the war with her daughter  . Sorry no clues on the IOW property.

Kent / William and John Tess Imprisonment

William Tess 1799-1862 was in prison twice.  Both Trials at Maidstone Kent . First for 4 months in 1855 and then tried on 14 March 1859. Given  6 months for stealing and because of previous offence . His son John Tess 1834-1918 was in prison for 2 months --trial 13/3/1859--so perhaps working with father. Criminal record on Ancestry .
 Wonder if there was a newspaper report as would like to learn more about the crime . Grateful for any information.

Kent / Charles Pearson and family

Charles Pearson was b 31/12/18167 Cranbrook kent  --not sure when he dies.
 In 1891 he is on the 1891 Census at Iden green Goudhurst with his father William . But i can not find Charles and his family of 3children on the 1901 census. He married 15/10/1892 Minnie Ruth Ballard Cranbrook. children Charles F b 1891,Florence M b 1895, Thomas John b 1899
Suspect different spelling of surname but having no luck. The family however are   on the  1911 return in Staplehurst.
Grateful if you can help with the 1901 census and the date of his death .

Hello the surnames Baker and James are proving to be popular and I am unable to trace their lines backwards. Hoping someone can help.
Jane Elizabeth Baker B 22/12/1889 marries Edwin James Giles 1/1/1913 Stoke Newington London and i Know their line forward.
Alas no idea if I have the correct line backwards.
From the marriage cert her father is Francis Baker a  meat Salesman.I think his dates are b abt 1866 d jan 1933 Probate 13/2/1933 wife Jane Harriet baker nee James. Marriage 1887 Spitlefields . His father Thomas ,a Butcher
Her Father William Henry James a Plumber.  So many folks of the same name I am very muddled.
Grateful for any information on the Baker and James line.

London and Middlesex / Edwin Giles Met Police

Edwin Giles was born 28/11/1857 in Upchurch kent and at some stage -perhaps between 1891 and 1909 was in the Met Police in London. No occupation given on 1891 Census. And I can not find him on the 1901. But in 1909 he left the Police and a copy of his Pension record is on Ancestry. In 1911 living at 85a Evering road Stoke Newington , London with wife and daughter and a Boarder. He is now working as a Timekeeper . I would like to know how to get his service records--sorry dont know his police number or anything about his time in the Police . He died 1915 in Hackney London .

Antrim / Robert Beggs Shipyard Accident

Robert John Beggs was born 2/11/1874 in Belfast but until 1897 was living in Barrow in Furness with his parents Richard and Mary Beggs. On the 1891 English census he is  shown at 16 as an apprentice boiler maker. He dies 19 August 1897 at the Royal hospital 195 Napier place near Sandy Row in  Belfast. The hospital is no longer there . We were told he was injured in an accident at the shipyard. Initially i  thought it was Barrow but could not find a death record . I found the death record on ancestry from Belfast Buriel indexes for him.  Buried in grave LI 319. Before the accident he may have lived at 285 Bearsbridge rd Belfast.

Have searched Groni on line  but can not find a death record --which is strange. Would a coroner  be involved and is this why i cant find the record. He was buried 21/8/1897

I  dont know if his father was also in Belfast working ( rest of family in Barrow) or went over when his son was injured/died. But he dies 3 months latter on 19 oct 1897 and is buried in the same plot.His record on Groni.

In case your wondering why i am confident this Robert Beggs is my Robert ---his mother died in 1913 but is buried not in barrow but in Belfast city Cemetery.

I know about the family in Barrow but interested in any information about Robert--was the accident reported --I haven't found anything . Why cant i find a death  certificate--keen to learn actual cause of daeth.

Lancashire / William Beggs Barrow in Furness to Natal

William Beggs was born 1878 in Barrow in Furness to parents George and Mary Beggs. He is on the 1881 and 1891 census with the family. In 1901 there is a William Beggs a boarder who is a ships engineer.
We have a silver t set which says WM Beggs, Natal Staff ,The Union Castle Mail Steamship Co 20/9/1906.
Initially we thought a retirement gift but now think more likely a wedding gift--but all guesstimates. No one to ask. Unfortunately know  nothing about him .

So this next  record may not be him .Record on ancestry of a William Beggs and wife Ethel leaving Durban and sailing on kenilworth Castle arriving Southampton 30/3/1925. Ship belongs to union  Castle line. Address gong to 1 French Street Vickerstown ,Barrow in Furness . Does he stay ? have not been able to find another shipping record. But nor can I find a death for him.

On another ancestry shipping record for 1933 there is a Richard Beggs 60 of 1 french Street going to New Zealand . However he does return at some point as he dies 13/4/1940 Barrow. I am sure this is Williams brother as shown on the census returns .


Against Williams  name in the ship From Durban  it just says Client rather than give a occupation as the other passengers have done. So you can understand why I am wondering if this man and the t set are connected.

Would greatly appreciate any information .
