Thank you for your excellent digging. Not uncommon for deceased children's name to be re-used and so as you say very possible. Do you think the Ann 1809 was possibly not christened and that is the reason she does not show or possibly lost or not recorded? I suppose my only other hope would be details on their wedding records, although I understand ages were not always accurate. Thank you once again. Mark

Somerset / James Smart of Stringston
« on: Sunday 01 January 23 17:17 GMT (UK)  »
James Smart (born 1845/6 in Stringston, Somerset. The last info for him I can definately trace is the Census info for 1861. He is a lodger and groom in Holford Somerset. I can find some possible references in the USA and it would be quite likely that he followed his brother Clement to America.
Thank you for any help/pointers.

Thanks everyone for your help. The Vowles relates to Alice Vowles of Street whose family were originally Fowl(e)s. A lot of Vowles in Somerset and I wonder if it was thought Fowls not so grand?  Mark

Hi many thanks. Holy Trinity Church at Street Find a Grave give her burial date as 5/6/1895 aged 85 and so it would appear not to be her unless the date was recorded incorrectly.

Thank you again, Mark

I am having difficulty with some of my Fowles relations.
Robert and Ann Fowls had children
Robert 1831. He married Elizabeth Somers but after the 1861 census I loose him.
Jane 1833
John 1835
Elizabeth 1838 -1838 seems she died as an infant.
Henry is my decendant.

I can't seem to track what happened to Jane, John and Robert. Did they emigrate or have I just somehow missed them/ Many thanks for any help.  Mark

United States of America / Charles Higgins from England (lost at sea?)
« on: Saturday 31 December 22 09:59 GMT (UK)  »
Sometime ago I tried to search for Charles but without success. I have had some wonderful recent help and thought it worth just trying again.
Charles Higgins born 1863 in Crewkerne/Chard area of Somerset. His family lived in the village of Tatworth. His father George was a policeman and his mother was Charlotte Ring.
1866 christened Charles Paul Higgins at Tatworth.
There is a possible mention re the local military in 1884. The last definite knowledge I have about his whereabouts is witnessing a will on the 16.7.1883 in his role as a sols clerk for his employers Messrs Tucker and Forward of Chard, Somerset.
At his brother George inquest in May 1889 (Tredegar, South Wales) it was mentioned a brother had come over from the USA some 4 years earlier for a visit. Although hersay, it does suggest he went to the USA.
My grandmother told him he had drowned. This was some 50 years ago and I wished I had asked her for the background. I can find no details of his entry or departure from this country or death. He appears to have disappeared. I have family photographs for many members of the Higgins family, but nothing for him. I would have expected to have come across something if he had survived. Any lines, thoughts, would be much appreciated. Did he change his name? Why did he leave a respectable job? What happened to him?   Mark
