Armed Forces / where to start researching old service records?
« on: Friday 15 August 08 17:28 BST (UK)  »
I'm sorry if this sounds like an obvious question.

I'm fairly well aware of who served where in the two world wars for my forbears, but what about older wars like those of the 18th Century, French Revolution/Napoleonic, and early 19th Century etc? Without any definite information that anyone in my tree from that era served in any of the services, where do you start?

Any pointers greatly appreciated.

Could someone with access to Parish Records do a look-up for me I wonder?
I'm trying to trace the birth of Thomas Griffin in Leigh-with-Bransford probably sometime around 1824, though it could be any time between 1821 and 1827 (censuses suggest differing dates).

The only entry I could find on the IGI records of the LDS website is a birth in Leigh-with-Bransford for November 1822. The mother is listed as Maria Griffin, a single woman. However on Thomas' marriage certificate in 1845 (which suggests a birth of 1827) his father is listed as Thomas Griffin. If that's the case surely both his parents would not be Griffin, unless the elder Thomas later married Maria and changed his surname for the sake of the child.

I wonder then if the son of Maria is a different birth. Are there are any other birth records for a Thomas Griffin in the 1820's for that area?

Many thanks

Many thanks!
I looked up Shaylor and the name co-existed with Shelley in the later census', so I presumed they would be seperate families, however this may be a connection.

As I'm based overseas I have to rely on what I can trace on the Internet, could you suggest any other angles I might be able to research for Langford?

Warmest Regards

As Shayler is probably a verbal misspelling of Shelley, or earlier form of the name, perhaps the 1851 and 1841 census' would list the family in yet another variation?

In 1851 William would presumably be unmarried but possibly living in Langford. As his father's name was also William would it be possible to check all the Williams in Langford born around 1834-1839 with phonetically similar names to Shelley or Shayler?

Hello,

I've traced the Shelley family as far as Langford (formerly Berkshire, now Oxfordshire), but have come up against a brick wall.

Later census's say that Albert Shelley, was born in Langford 1859, as was his father William Shelley, born Langford c.1839.

William's wife was Jane (formerly Herbert), born c.1838, died 1870 in Oxford.

I've been unable to find any birth or marriage records for the family prior to 1871 when William re-married, nor can I find any trace of Shelleys in Langford. I do know they were either Baptists or Methodists however - could this be the reason perhaps?

Any help much appreciated!

Thanks

John

Hello

I'm researching the Shelley family and have traced Albert Shelley, born Langford (now Oxfordshire, formerly Berks) 1859, and his father William Shelley born Langford c.1839. Mother's name Jane (formerly Herbert). It seems the family were non-conformist Baptists or Methodists.

In the 1871 census Jane is deceased and William & Albert are in Chipping Norton. Many thanks! Any help much appreciated.

I checked the Free BMD site and found birth registrations for Arthur George, Alfred, Louisa, Agnes and Alice Mary as Shelley but nothing for the elder 3

There were it seems four older children - Albert, Shadrack (listed in the 1871 census but not subsequently), Matilda and William 2, the latter born c.1868 in Cirencester. I presume these older children were all born to William's first wife, and he only starting registering births after his second marriage to Jane. It's tempting to suspect that William's first wife died after childbirth, though I can't quite pinpoint when this would be. William 2 was born c.1868, then Arthur George in Mar 1870. Perhaps this was the cause of the mother's death. William re-married in Chipping Norton in June 1871, the following March saw the birth of Alfred. It all seems rather fast paced!

Debbie that's brilliant. Many thanks!

As Shelley is not an Oxfordshire name it's been relatively easy so far to trace my family during their time in Chipping Norton - it seems William Shelley moved there from Gloucestershire around the time of 1870 following the death of his first wife, and the family stayed there until moving to Birmingham in 1901. However it's the family prior to 1870 which has remained completely illusive. I don't even know the name of William's first wife. My father thinks that they were probably farm workers that moved around the region until settling in Chipping Norton, which doesn't help matters. Nevertheless if both William and his eldest son were born in Langford as the census's indicate, the family were presumably rooted there for some time.

Frustratingly Langford is listed variously as being in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire in the census's.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Researching the Shelley family that lived in Chipping Norton in the 2nd half of the 19th Century. The records agree that the head of the family William Shelley was born c.1839 (1881 census) or c.1834 (1871 census), in Langford (Oxfordshire/Berkshire), as was his eldest son Albert (b.1859). I can't find any references to the family prior to that date, and no record in Langford of any Shelley. As I live in the Far East I'm currently limited to the internet for research, any pointers or suggestions very gratefully recieved.
