Northamptonshire / Berrills, the family that built Bozeat
« on: Sunday 19 May 13 15:45 BST (UK)  »
Dear Rootschatters,

My maternal great grandfather was William Berrill, mason, born Bozeat in 1843, and his father was Thomas Wykes Berrill, mason, born Bozeat in 1818.

I have recently received from New Zealand (!) copies of a series of articles published in "About Bozeat" in 1986 under the title "The family that built Bozeat" written by the Rev Norman Palmer (not related to me as far as I know). Both these gentlemen are mentioned in the article along with many other Berrills but it seems that there may have been further items relating to the Berrills published later. The last article I have makes reference to the future publication of Gloria Wallis's family tree, of an article by John Berrill, great grandson of Levi Berrill, and possibly pages from the Berrill Family Bible (from Dennis Perkins?).

If anyone has copies of these articles, my contact in NZ and myself, would be very interested to hear from them. I would also be interested to hear from any other researchers into the Berrill family.

Thanks in advance,

Paul Palmer

Hello again Marilyn,

I haven't seen this mentioned but there was a cholera outbreak at Potterspury in late 1854 - See http://www.potterspury.org.uk/vh/cholera.htm

My grandmother spent 3 months in quarantine at the Irthlingborough Road Hospital, Wellingborough with scarlet fever. As she went on to live to the ripe old age of 102 I do not have any written evidence for the year but I remember being told that it happened when she was 18, so born 27 Nov 1875 this should make it very late 1893 or 1894.

Not within your original time period but I have come across information on the plague or pest in Northamptonshire between 1570 and 1665. If you are interested it is covered in Pages 155-158 of 'The Parish Registers of England' by J.Charles Cox published in 1910 and available on-line at archive.org.Alternatively I can extract the relevent portions and post here if there is interest.

Regards,
Paul

Northamptonshire / Re: 1781 Militia Lists

Hi Joanne,

I do not have the 1781 Militia List but I do have a transcription of one dated 25Nov1777 for Wollaston. I do not know if this will add to your information or not but your two men are listed as Wm. Brown, Tailor, and Geo. Brown, cordwainer.

Hope that helps.

In the locked thread on the Northamptonshire board I see that you are asking where Rowlatt's Yard at Wellingborough might be. As an old Wellingburian I would suggest that this may well have been on the east side of Silver Street. J. Rowlatt and Son, hardware merchants and ironmongers, are at 16 Silver Street and claim 250 years of existence (though I cannot confirm that they have always been at the same location...). The 1841 Census entry indicates that George Stevenson was living in the High Street and this is really just a continuation of Silver Street northwards.

Hope that helps

Paul

Hi Richard,

Just came across your thread.

I'm distantly connected to the Lucketts, through Thomas Richardson Luckett's uncle, Thomas! I have not researched his descendants so the information from you and KGarrad will help, thank you. If you are interested I have several generations of Luckett ancestors if you are interested, T R's parents were John born Kislingbury in 1843 married Emma Richardson in 1863 and died at Harpole in 1919, Emma was born at Bugbrooke in 1842 and dies at Kislingbury in 1906.

Paul

I have unwanted birth and death certificates for this gentleman who I wrongly thought to be my uncle by marriage.I had always thought he came from the Thrapston area but now I know my George Headland was from Dallington.

I have available for George Alfred HEADLAND a birth certificate showing born Newtown, Woodford on 17 April 1914 and a death certificate showing that he died at 17 Morris Avenue, Rushden on 8 April 1987.

If you are interested drop me a PM.

Paul

Northamptonshire Lookup Requests / Re: Upton (nr. Peterborough)parish records-Gess

Hi Mike,

Just spotted this discussion and thought I had found more information on my great great grandmother's brother's wife's family ::)

She was Elizabeth G(u)ess baptised at Lutton (not too far from Upton) on 31May1818 parents John and Ann! I have been doing some checking tonight and I don't think my John and Ann are yours and nor are the parents of the children baptised at Higham Ferrers.

There is a John Guess from Irchester who married Ann Brown from Higham at Higham on 13Oct1805 and who I think it is reasonable to assume are the parents of William, Rebecca, John and, one more, Mary Ann (baptised 18May1815).

There is a John Guess who married Ann Cooper at Lowick (not that far from Upton and Lutton) on 21Nov1791 who could well be the parents of Mary, Frances, William, John and Samuel, though I could not find their baptisms.

I was about to say that I failed to find a John G(u)ess marrying an Ann to fit my Elizabeth and her sisters Anna and Sarah... but I just found Mary Ann Guess marrying at Lutton so it looks as though the Higham Guess family could have moved to Lutton and thus be mine.

Hope my ramblings are helpful.
Regards,
Paul

Completed Northamptonshire Lookup Requests / Re: Nags Head Yard

Hi CraftyP,

The Mr Green I mentioned was not family, as far as I know, but he was the business partner of my grandfather who was a builder. Mr Green was the money man as I understand it. I've been trying to remember the name of the pub for weeks and Sandy's mention of the New Inn turned the little light on. I'm just curious to know a little more about him. I am afraid I don't remember hearing his first name but their company was called Berrill and Green based in Chequers Lane (just at the bottom of Cannon Street).

I do have two Wellingborough Greens on the edge of my tree, John born c1701 and his daughter Elizabeth born 1737. Any possible connection?

HeatherLynne's idea sounds good but I have people born or living in these Yards when they would still have been in use as coaching inns so it probably doesn't completely answer the question...
