Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Garys and Gareys in Stockbridge 1600s and 1700s
« on: Wednesday 26 November 14 08:55 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if someone can advise me. I am descended from Richard Gary/Garey (1755-1801) in Stockbridge, Hants, who married Hannah Elliot (1755-1833) in 1770. Richard's parents were Edward and Elizabeth (I think they are Edward  - born 1718 - and Elizabeth Parker - born 1730- , married Stockbridge 26.10.1710).
I have found 2 trees online, apparently by the same person, but slightly different. They give Edward's parents as John (baptised 26.12.1705) married Mary ?Plowman, born 1700. John's father was also John (1680-) and his father was Richard, born 1660 or 1665, who married Elinor (born 1660). Richard's father was also Richard born 1630 or 40, who married Jane born 1635 or 50 in Stockbridge.
There are slight differences in date between the two trees I found, but the main problem is the two Johns. In one tree there is only one John (baptised 1705) but both Johns are given with the same source that "he" was a master carpenter with an apprentice in 1718. Unlikely if he only 13 years old. So the other (father) John (1680) seems likely. The son is also cited as a "taylor".

I like the idea of the master carpenter, as many of my family, who later migrated to Shoreditch and Stroud, were wood workers and walking stick makers, right up to my grandfather.

I am going round in circles, so I thought I would ask the experts if I can accept the observations I quote. What I am trying to do is to find out if the links above are likely, so that I can get myself back to 1630 from a century later.
Thanks if you can advise. Laurence

London and Middlesex / Garey family: walking stick makers in London and Stroud
« on: Monday 16 December 13 08:38 GMT (UK)  »
I am descended from Edward Garey (1777-1851), born in Stockbridge, Hants (sometimes spelled Geary or Gary). He moved to London and was a carpenter in the Shoreditch area. His son Henry William (born Bishopsgate1813) was a whip maker, and his son, also Henry William (1837-1901), a stick carver who moved to one of the new walking stick factories in the Stroud area from about 1870 to 1890. Brother Walter Eastmead Garey (1843-1867) was an ivory turner in London, and another brother, Richard Thomas, a stick carver who also went to the Stroud factory around 1870 and stayed there. He was my gg grandfather.
Another family of perhaps related Gareys descended from stick dresser William (born 1810), through son William Alfred (Shoreditch1837-1917), also a stick dresser, to his son (another William Alfred, 1860-1887), a walking stick maker again in Shoreditch, and brother Walter (1870-1938) a walking stick filer.
So it seems that a good basis of carpentry skills could be turned to more delicate objects such as whips, ivory, and dressed walking sticks. Richard Thomas's son Marcus George, my grandfather, was also a wood pattern maker at the Baker Perkins factory in Peterborough. So the line continued.
What I would like to know is whether these two families of stick makers are related. Can anyone help? Thanks
Laurence

London and Middlesex / Gareys in London from 1700
« on: Monday 22 November 10 17:05 GMT (UK)  »
I only started posting on Rootschat a couple of weeks ago, so I went to the Beginners' forum, and I had amazing responses from some very alert people there (Gareys in London around 1800). But I would like to go further. If my correspondents see this, I hope they don't mind my posting here too. I did mention the possibility to them, and it seems the logical place!

I have for some years been trying to trace back my Garey family in the East End of London, using family legend, Internet and, when possible, Kew and Guildhall. I got stuck at:
Edward Garey m Mary Warner 1807.
After that it goes:
  Henry William b 1816 m Elizabeth Jones in 1835
    Richard Thomas (1845-1914) m Augusta Unger (1848-1902) in 1869
Marcus George 1882-1957 m Sarah Ann Green (1883-1968) in 1912
Cyril Marcus (1916-2007) m my mother

Richard Thomas was a walking stick carver. He went off from London to the Stroud area. I note there was a new walking stick factory there, and that was his job.

My problem was to get back further, and my correspondents on the beginners' section guided me through finding 2 more generations back, taking me to Hampshire, and particularly Stockbridge, and a family of carpenters who must have moved to Shoreditch.

However, there were a lot of Gareys around the Shoreditch area around 1800, so I wonder if anyone has a link between these possibly related families.

Thanks.

Laurence

Family History Beginners Board / Gareys in London around 1800

This is my first post on this forum, so please excuse me if I have got the wrong place.
I have for some years been trying to trace back my Garey family in the East End of London, using family legend, Internet and, when possible, Kew and Guildhall. I have got stuck at:
Edward Garey m Mary Warner 1807.
After that it goes:

Marcus George 1882-1957 m Sarah Ann Green (1883-1968) in 1912
Cyril Marcus (1916-2007) m my mother.

Richard Thomas was a walking stick carver. He went off from London to the Stroud area. I note there was a new walking stick factory there, and that was his job.

My problem is to get back further. There were a lot of Gareys locally around the Shoreditch area arund 1800, so I wonder if anyone has a link between these possibly related families.

Thanks.
