Surrey / Godalming Parish Records 1851/52 - Please Help
« on: Friday 31 January 14 09:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I am desperately looking for the parents of Alfred James Hall b1851 Godalming and his brother Robert b1852 Godalming. I can trace them through the census returns without any problems, neither of their marriages are recorded except the registration. I would like to avoid buying the birth certificate if possible as I really can't afford it at the moment I really need to know (I have my suspicions) which of the previous generations brothers is their father. So if anyone has access to these records I would truly appreciate it.

Thank you, Jo

London and Middlesex / Help Please with Brick wall - Mary Barnes c1863 - 1967
« on: Monday 05 August 13 10:02 BST (UK)  »
Looking for any help with finding out what happened to my 2x ggrandmother Mary Barnes.

What I do know:
Marriage at St Nicholas Church, Plumstead, 21 Jul 1883
Mary Barnes, full age, spinster, Plumstead, father James Barnes, Hawker
Thomas James Puplett, full age, bachelor, Waterman/Lighterman, father Thomas James Puplett, Waterman/Lighterman, both signed, witnesses G W King & Annie Puplett (sister to Thomas).

1891 census: 10 The Dwellings, Battersea

Thomas & Mary ( age given as 24, born Woolwich, which would mean age 16 at time of marriage?) and their four children: Mary Rosina 1885, Thomas Jas 1886, John Edward 1889 & Samuel George 1891.

Thomas senior dies 25 Apr 1896 and his death certificate lists his address as 7 Crescent Place, High Street, Battersea.

This is where I lose Mary, I have not found a likely birth, the only James Barnes, Hawker (c 1820 Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire ) that I can find is married to a Caroline (c 1822 St Pancras, General Shop Keeper) in 1881, living in 20 Wilderness St, Bermondsey. In 1891 this James is a widower, a port watchman, living in Long Lane Bermondsey, not found in 1871.

I have found her sons Thomas, John & Samuel in 1901 (Thomas with his paternal GM, John & Sam in Industrial School, no sign of Mary Rosina) & 1911 i have found all four children. John dies in battle in 1915 and Thomas, Samuel and Mary Rosina are well traced from then on in. I also have everything I need on the Pupletts prior to their marriage.

Mary Puplett formerly Barnes then has another daughter, also named Mary on 1 Oct 1904 at Newington Workhouse, no father named, her address at the time is 99 Mint Street, which appears to be a common boarding house for women.  Baby Mary dies October 1905, this is my last sighting of Mary? Other known facts is that John & Samuels military records list only siblings as next of kin, Thomas's military records appear to be destroyed unfortunately!

Where is Mary Rosina in 1901?
What happens to Mary Barnes? Who were her parents?

Any help with finding Mary would be greatly appreciated as I have been stuck on this for a very long time. Also, as far as the Puplett's go, I have traced them as completely as possible going back many generations so please don't waste time there on my behalf.

Thanking you in great hope,

Jo  :)

Kent Lookup Requests / Kent Probate Indexes
« on: Sunday 06 January 13 10:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I just purchased a weekend sub to Origins and a found a reference to a will that I desperately desire to get my hands on. It is in the Kent Probate Indexes and gives the reference of
THOMAS   PUPLET, 1744, Carpenter, Sydenham in Lewisham, Kent, Rochester Archdeaconry
Document Type   Document Reference
Registered will   DRa/Pwr 6.108
Original will   DRa/Pw 10

It doesn't tell me where/how I can get my hands on a copy, preferably digital? I live in Australia and am not sure who/where I need to contact to find out. Any suggestions or advice is gratefully received.

Thanks, Jo

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / LMA Look up Please
« on: Friday 30 November 12 10:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I am hoping some kind soul will help with a lookup at the LMA as I live in Australia and am unable to get there myself. It is a removal order and appeal for Ann Puplett and her six children from St Mary Whitechapel to St Katherine Coleman. Reference code: MJ/SP/1846/07/047. From Collection MIDDLESEX SESSIONS OF THE PEACE: COURT IN SESSION
The origins of the Justices of the Peace lie in the temporary appointments of 'conservators' or 'keepers' of the peace made at various times of unrest between the late twelfth century and the fourteenth century. In 1361 the &#... Date: 1846 Apr 23-Jul. I know Ann's husband Henry died in 1846, I have been unable to find either of them in 1841 (the three youngest children are in the Workhouse then, no sign of the older three). I have found various mentions of Henry in the newspapers, as a smuggler ( he was a waterman/lighter man) and also named as the father of Ann's sistes, Sarah, child! But beyond that, his baptism and death, he is a ghost. I am hoping that the removal order could shed some light.
I realise I am asking a lot, but would be very grateful if someone could help in any way.
With fingers crossed, Jo  :)

This is all the details given on FindMyPast and I am searching the Sonnex family in London, have not seen any previous "Sonnex" records listed in Cornwall so was wondering if William was one of mine and if there are any further details listed. Any assistance given is greatly appreciated, Regards, Jo

The Common Room / Did Isaac die from foul play?
« on: Wednesday 31 October 12 02:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, in my research of John Tunnicliffe, my 3x Great grandfather (born abt 1825 in Staffordshire), I came across the possible death certificate of his brother Isaac (born abt 1827 same). John came to Australia sometime between 1854 - 1856, married in Bendigo & settled there until his death, Isaac possibly the Isaac who arrived in Aug 1855 aboard the John Elder. So whilst trolling the Victorian BMD online I found a death cert for an Isaac Tunnicliff, age about 30, parents & place of birth unknown, "supposed to be a joiner" "Drowned in the Yarra, Certified at an inquest 26th March, 1856".

All well and good - I penciled this death in a possibility for  G Uncle Issac. Then browsing through TROVE searching "Tunnicliff" I came across the attached notice.  Now I am just curious as to what this could be about?? Note that Good Friday in 1856 fell on March 23rd - two days before Isaac's inquest.

Any thoughts, suggestions, avenues of discovery or input is greatly received, Jo  ???  ???  ???
