Hi David,

No help with the origin of John Roots sadly, but Sarah was a widow when married, this seems a likely a fit…
John Chennells married Sarah Putney (both signed x) 20 Feb 1797, St Mary Watford, Herts
George Chennells, s/o John & Sarah baptised 18 Feb 1798, St Mary Watford, Herts
John Chennells, buried 11 Dec 1798, St Mary Watford, Herts.

Sarah Chennells (widow) married John Roots, bachelor, 1 Sept 1800, St Mary Watford, Herts. John signed, Sarah x, witnessed by Martha Field and William Field

Baptisms at Pinner St Mary to parents John and Sarah Roots:
1800 Joshua
1802 Sarah
1803 Ann
1805 Richard
1807 Mary
1809 John
1810 John George
1812 James
1814 Charles (noted from Pinner Common, father a Miller)
1817 Thomas (noted from Pinner Common, father a labourer)

Sarah buried 1823, age 49.

I’ll have a look later to see if I can find anything else.

Where is Sarah in 1851? William could have just been at his mother’s house looking after her or visiting on the census night and have lived with his family the rest of the time?

Or vice versa, Sarah and children may have been visiting son William in 1841.

Have you placed her in an 1851 census anywhere? And did she have an occupation on her marriage certificate?
