Midlothian / Re: SCHOOLHOUSE COWPITS musslebugh

Saw your earlier post asking if the schoolhouse building is still there. Will be out that way soon so can take a look if I know you still haven't resolved this. Any additional info about the precise location would be helpful - there's a Cowpits Road near Whitcraig and a Cowpits Ford Road slightly west nearer Monktonhall but as far as I know no village or hamlet now called Cowpits.

Loads of family trees and info on the Newhaven area of North Leith.

The Common Room / Re: Legal minimum age for marriage in England in 1887

Thanks Debbie

That does help a lot......... I have a great grandmother whose age fluctuates just a little in my "sightings" of her. Just wanted to check that she hadn't added a few months to her age in order to marry at the age of 20 if that was "under age" at the time.

Can anyone tell me what the minimum age for marriage with parent/guardian's consent was in England in 1887?

With thanks, Anne

Northumberland / Re: Newcastle Bridge Murder

Have you tried the archives of local newspapers? There's probably one that's been in existence since the time of the event and a murder must surely have been reported.

Northumberland Lookup Requests / 1841 Census Berwick THOMPSON
« on: Sunday 27 March 05 23:14 BST (UK)  »
I would be very grateful if someone with access to the 1841 census could find me the following:

Joseph THOMPSON occupation Baker age 45 in Berwick on Tweed, possible address Marygate. I would expect his household to include wife Mary, son Ralph and daughter Margaret.

I'm specifically interested in Joseph's birthplace, if this Census carried that info.

Thanks, Anne
