Devon / When did they live in Shaldon, Devon?
« on: Sunday 07 July 13 14:28 BST (UK)  »
My Aunts Eileen and Peggy (Margaret) O'Sullivan (both spinsters) lived with their widowed mother Mary (Minnie) at The Hamiltons, Torquay Rd, Shaldon in the late 30's, before moving to "Whately" Bishopsteignton sometime pre 1960.
I am trying to firm up dates but can find no records anywhere (other than one telephone directory record for Mr(s) E. O'Sullivan in 1960)
Mary died in 1962, Peggy in 1982 and Eileen in 1976. All three are buried in Bishopsteignton.
(There was some controversy about Eileen's death a few years ago when a distant relative claimed to have administered a fatal dose of morphine to her when she was dying. I am in contact with that family, but for obvious reasons this line of inquiry has to be sensitively handled.)
So, to re-cap.... When did the O'Sullivans move to The Hamiltons? (Probably from Woolwich). This may have been a rented property.
When did they move to Whately, Bishopsteignton? My father believes that this house was purchased by his mother Therese Massey nee O'Sullivan for them.

The Common Room / Any Artists/Illustrators up for a challenge?
« on: Thursday 04 July 13 11:52 BST (UK)  »
I have just posted a very vivid newspaper description of the accident that killed my Great Grandfather in 1904, under the title of "Buried deep" in Graveyards and Gravestones on this site. The huge amount of technical and descriptive detail about the circumstances have always given me a clear picture in my minds eye of the tragedy as it unfolded. It is the sort of picture that London Illustrated would have published.
A steam engineer who I know told me "The engine referred to was either a static beam or horizontal steam engine and would have had a fly-wheel of approximately 16' diameter. (1ton weight = 1' diameter + shaft weight)".
Possibly a bit morbid I know, but I would love to interpret the detail into a picture on paper, but am not very artistic. So, is anyone up for the challenge? It would be a fitting family memorial for a man of whom no photographs exist and who lies in what appears to be an unmarked grave.

Graveyards and Gravestones / Buried deep!
« on: Wednesday 03 July 13 12:33 BST (UK)  »
My Irish great grandfather James Sullivan, was described as a well respected leading hand at Woolwich Arsenal when he died in an accident at work after many years of service. I have finally tracked down his burial details and am shocked to discover that he was interred in unconsecrated ground, 3rd Class, nine feet down! The Mayor of Woolwich  (who was also the local undertaker) was one of the mourners and his son later married into our family!
Why the undignified burial? Am I to assume that there will be no grave marker as a consequence?

Armed Forces / Uncle Tom, where is your service number & record???
« on: Monday 01 July 13 11:23 BST (UK)  »
My Uncle Tom has always fascinated me, unfortunately all his side of my family has passed away and he remains a complete mystery.
Thomas Patrick O'Sullivan was born in Woolwich in 1901 to Mary and James Sullivan. Thomas died on 26 Aug 1963 in Bishopsteignton, Devon and is buried in the local churchyard along with his sisters and mother. He never married. His death certificate states that he was a Warrant Officer, RAF retired, however I believe him to have been in the RNVR working with sea planes in the Middle East.
My father remembers that he may have been attached to RAF Odham in 1948 and that he may have been shot down in Palestine at some point.
A search of on-line records reveals that the only Thomas Patrick O'Sullivan (that I can find) was a Temporary Lieutenant RNVSR, Assistant Hope Bay 1946. Could this be the same man?
How can I find out more about him?

The Common Room / One week, 127 views and not one reply? Have I beaten Roots Chat members?
« on: Wednesday 20 February 13 18:13 GMT (UK)  »
I recently posted a request for help regarding a Revd Andrew Massey on the Aberdeen section of the forum, within which I also asked for some general information about the lives and dress of early Church of Scotland ministers.

I wonder whether by posting this in the apparent correct section, I have actually missed the wide knowledge base that members of Rootschat have? Please if anyone can help, do have a look for my post and reply if you can.

The following link should take you directly to my original post.

Aberdeenshire / Revd. Andrew Massie b.Abt 1600. How can I find his parents?
« on: Wednesday 13 February 13 11:40 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for information about Revd Andrew Massey b. Abt 1600 and his wife Susan Massie nee Garden. He was ordained before 1631, and was initially attached to Drumblade before transferring to Auchterless.

There are mentions about him in the Sheriff's court records and Fasti Ecclesiea Scoticanae, but I cannot find any reference to his parents or what became of him. Are there ordination records for the period perhaps? Any pointers would be most welcome.

Also how would a church of Scotland minister of dressed in the early 1600's.  What would his day to day life have been like, How can I find when he died and is buried? So many questions....

Hi, it's a long time since I visited the forum. Now I find myself with time on my hands once more, it's back to the family history I go!
Would any of the talented members please be willing to have a go at tidying up Henry? The picture looks to have been taken through glass and try as I may, I cannot make it look better.
I watch this thread with eager anticipation! lol
PS, I like the new look forum!!!

The Common Room / Father's Certificate of Baptism raises questions
« on: Wednesday 24 October 12 21:26 BST (UK)  »
My Gran was of southern Irish descent, albeit born in Woolwich in 1904. My Dad was born in 1924 and his father died in 1932. In 1934 Dad was baptised. Sometime after that he went to Clapham College and then on to Mayfield. Both these colleges were run by Xaverian Brothers.

I have recently found Dad's Certificate of Baptism which has raised a few questions;

1. Dad has gained another middle name "Francis". This does not appear anywhere else and is not a family name. Why would this be?

2. The Certificate says "was baptised on the 14th March 1934" with the word "conditionally" inserted by hand before baptized. What does this mean?

3. The certificate is witnessed as a true extract on 4th June 1934. Why the delay?

4. My Gran has adopted all of my Grandfather's first and middle names on the form. Was this normal?

I imagine that father must have been baptised in order to facilitate his entry into the school of his mother's choice. Could this be the case?

Fellow Rootchatters opinions on all of the above would be most welcome.

World War One / EAST MUDROS MILITARY CEMETERY - Greece
« on: Wednesday 10 October 12 16:02 BST (UK)  »
Is anyone likely to be visiting this cemetery in Greece? I would like to obtain a photograph of a grave of an ancestor. If not does anyone know how I would be able to obtain a photo?
