World War One / Tracing a name from Regimental number
« on: Wednesday 06 August 14 21:56 BST (UK)  »
In preparing the details of two of my relatives for the RootsChat WW1 In Memoriam Board, I've discovered that the two cousins enlisted together into the Army Service Corps as drivers T4/109330 and T4/109332 respectively. I would be very interested to find out who was the recruit between them, either a fellow miner 'pal' or another relative even. How would I go about it please (if possible on-line)?

A coal miner from  Mountain Ash, Glamorgan, George enlisted in his home town on 2nd June 1915 into the Army Service Corps as a Driver T4/109330 alongside his first cousin Tommy (T4/109332) http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=694334.0

Later transferred to 2nd Bn Duke of Wellington's (West Riding) Regiment as Private 25539. Killed in action 28th March 1918 and commemorated on the Arras Memorial so presumably no known grave. He was 24.

Driver Thomas Henry Watkins was born in 1896 in Aberdare, Glamorgan, S. Wales and enlisted in June 1915 in his home town of Mountain Ash where he was a coal miner.

He served with 332 Coy, Army Service Corps and at the time of his death was attached to 129th Field Ambulance. He is buried in Canada Farm Cemetery, Belgium. He was 21 years old.

Had he lived he would have been my great uncle - my grandmother's favourite brother.

Far from forgotten.

The Common Room / British Civilians in Gib

Not sure where this should be posted for best result.

As an NCO's wife I believe my G.Aunt Minnie joined her husband for an extended period during his deployment in Gibraltar between 1897 and 1900. Sgt Harry Goodenough elected for Messing Allowance mid-1898 which I think means he lived outside Army accommodation from that time, probably with his wife.

Can any RootsChatters  please suggest a means to check Minnie's presence on the Rock bearing in mind that she seems to have travelled to and from UK under her own steam as a civilian.

Renfrewshire / Boilermakers Strike pre WW1
« on: Saturday 17 May 14 17:31 BST (UK)  »
I've just received a copy of the sole surviving last page of a letter written by my grandfather to his Aunt in London (who died in 1910). He had moved his family back to Scotland in 1906 to find work at his trade of iron moulder. This he seems to have done, at a Boiler Works in or around Barrhead where they were living. He expresses fear about the effects of a Boilermakers' strike on his own employment. Can anyone tell me please where I may be better able to date this fragment of correspondence by putting dates to the strike?

World War Two / *COMPLETED* Identification details

Hi,
I need bit of help with this one from WW2 please. Whilst I get the Captain's three 'pips', I think can read the shoulder title (I won't say, see what you think). I've never come across another example of this one - any idea what background colour was used?. I am unsure which Army flash this is, and am completely stumped by the three bars below it. All comments welcome.

Occupation Interests / A Stationer's work
« on: Tuesday 04 March 14 13:47 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I have a chap born in Scotland in 1849 whose trade is 'Stationer' in the 1881 Census. In 1887 his daughter's B.Cert has the occupation 'Stationer (Journeyman)' against her father's name.

Can anyone please enlighten me as to what in the 1870's and 1880's tasks constituted a stationer's work and required an apprenticeship?

Technical Help / Denying administrator status Windows 7
« on: Monday 17 February 14 17:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

When I set up my new computer with Win 7 three years ago, as I was sole user my account had to be that of an administrator rather than just a user. I wasn't offered the option of setting up an overall Admin account with higher privileges.

Running Spybot recently has demanded to be run as Administrator for full function, refusing my administrator privileges or any similar account, even one named 'Administrator' specially created. ???

Where am I going wrong? And can anyone please suggest a way out of this impasse?
