The Common Room / GRO emails
« on: Monday 25 November 19 13:43 GMT (UK)  »
There's a problem with GRO (England & Wales) outgoing emails at present.  They can't send confirmations of orders, and more importantly, they can't notify you when a order has been despatched.  This applies to both paper and PDF versions.

They're working on it (unless it's been fixed in the last 15 minutes).  In the meantime, check 'My orders' on their website if you're expecting something.

Berkshire Lookup Requests / Burial of Maria ROBINSON, Sunningwell parish, 1840
« on: Thursday 12 September 19 16:21 BST (UK)  »
If anyone is going to BRO Reading, could you please check this burial record for me?

BFHS (via FindMyPast) and OFHS both have the date as 20 January 1840; all well and good, I thought.

However, the GRO record states that Maria ROBINSON died on 27 January at 11am and her death was registered on the same day.  Informant was a neighbour, present at death, who 'made her mark'.

Confusing.  Does the burial date fit with others on the same page, in which case the registrar made a mistake?  Or was she buried on, say, 30 January and it's been mistranscribed?

The Common Room / UK Find-a-Will charges
« on: Monday 22 July 19 13:31 BST (UK)  »
I'm probably the last person to find out that the charge for downloading a will has gone down from £10 to £1.50 :D

Guess what I'm doing next ;D

The Common Room / FreeBMD searching improved
« on: Thursday 30 May 19 16:24 BST (UK)  »
It always used to be a minor nuisance that FreeBMD would allow you to select either a county/counties, or a district.  For example, many of my searches have involved Woodstock RD so I've had to scroll nearly all the way down the dropdown list :(

Now you can select both!  Choosing a county means the list of districts is limited to just the ones in or neighbouring that county.  A small matter in the overall scheme of things, but a long overdue improvement in my opinion ;D

And now you'll probably all tell me that you already knew and it's old news :-\  :D

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Note in 1784 burial records
« on: Sunday 05 May 19 11:59 BST (UK)  »
Here's a snip from Ancestry's burial records for Sandford on Thames, Oxfordshire in 1784.

Elizabeth might be my ancestor, but I can't make out the additional line of writing between her entry and the next.  Something about '........ Duty ...................... Octr 12 1785'  :-\

FindMyPast have today released a copy of the Domesday Book, written in 'a short form of Latin'.

Prepare to be inundated :D

The Common Room / FindMyPast - Domesday Book
« on: Friday 15 March 19 12:53 GMT (UK)  »
FindMyPast Friday new releases today include a copy of the Domesday Book for most of England, searchable by county.

'The book is written in a short form of Latin' they tell us casually.  There's no translation.

On a scale of 1 (useless) to 10 (great, just what I need!) how would you rate this offering?

The Common Room / Death look-up in England - 2016
« on: Saturday 25 August 18 18:17 BST (UK)  »
I've come across a UK probate record for a person with exactly the same name and probable location as an old friend of mine.  We lost touch some years ago but I'd really like to be sure whether this is who I think it is.

If someone's going to one of the locations where the up-to-date GRO index is held, could you please PM me for the probate details and check against the death index?

Many thanks in advance,
Carol
