Oxfordshire / Woodstock registration district - parishes covered 1840s
« on: Wednesday 01 May 13 11:42 BST (UK)  »
I have marriage, death and birth registrations at Woodstock Bicester in the 1840s and 1850. The families concerned were living in either Lower or Upper Heyford when children were baptised.  In the case of the marriage and death records I haven't been able to find either in the parish records but I have found the siblings of the birth registration being registered at Bicester and baptised at Upper Heyford.

Does anyone know what parishes were covered by the Woodstock registration district at the time?

I can of course get copies of the certificates but I'd rather get the parish records from OFHS as I can get more info for my money and trace the ancestry/siblings etc.  I do have the OXF-BIC03 cd which contains the Lower and Upper Heyford parishes amongst others but I don't know which of the Woodstock ones to get as at least two contain parishes relatively near to the Heyfords.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Warwickshire / Re: George and father Jonathan Hawkins

I'm now struggling with George's son George Benjamin Hawkins, birth registered Q4 1871 Aston and baptised 7 Sept 1873 at All Saints, Birmingham.  I can't find him in any census returns or any other records until 1904 when he married Selina Annie Toghill at St Olave Bermondsey and then in the 1911 census.

I have found that his mother, Annie Maria Hawkins, remarried as a widow on 1st December 1878 to Samuel Chatwin at Edgbaston but I can't find them in any subsequent census records to see if George Benjamin was living with them under Samuel's surname.  I have found one likely death registration for his father George in Q2 at Monmouth 1872 which might explain the gap between GB's birth and baptism.

George is also an enigma in that in the 1861 census he is described as a 11 year old ploughboy but in his marriage certificate and the 1871 census he is described as an engineer.  Quite a change unless engineer is a euphemism for navvi - I'll have to get a copy of the death certificate to see if it throws more light on him.

If anyone can throw any light on GB and his mother from 1881 to 1904 I'd be extremely grateful.

Thanks Mabel.

Sometimes when you hit a brick wall it takes someone else looking at it to see a way through, good avenues to look into now.  :-)

Hi Kevin

Thanks for the 1871 census, that result didn't come up in the searches that I did with variants of Hawkins!

I did find the Upper Heyford entry but I'm not certain of that as it's quite a way from Aston but I'll look into that again.

Warwickshire / George and father Jonathan Hawkins

From their marriage certificate I have a George Hawkins marrying an Annie Maria Russell on 1 Jan 1871 at Ch.Ch. (presumably Christ Church) Sparkwood in the Parish of Aston with George's father noted as Jonathan Hawkins, Labourer and Annie's father as Benjamin Russell dec Printer - Benjamin is the subject of a previous topic here.

I can't find any marriage for Jonathan Hawkins and neither he nor George appear in any census records that I can find - I've checked on Ancestry, FamilySearch and FindMy Past all to no avail.

If anyone can throw any light on these characters I'd be extremely grateful.

I have a later character, George Benjamin Hawkins bc 1872 Boardsley, Birmingham, allegedly the son of the above George and Annie according to IGI but I'm waiting for his birth certificate to confirm this.  I find it puzzling that both George and his father Jonathan seem to have evaded the census enumerators especially as George described his occupation as engineer when he married, presumably a settled occupation.

Thanks Jim

Surname looks like Rufsell or am I misreading the way they used to write at that time, if Rufsell then that opens another avenue to check.

Thanks for the replies, I hadn't thought of using familysearch in that manner.  Doh!

I checked familysearch before you posted ciderdrinker and came up with much the same list except that it listed an Ann christened 13 Jan 1815 with no birth date as well as the Ann you found born 4 Jan 1815 shown as christened on 27 March 1815.  I'm suspecting the Ann christened on 13 Jan was born after James and before the Ann christened on 27 March but who died post her christening but I can't find a record of that.

I also found my Benjamin born 1820 so it looks as if the parents Benjamin and Ann used both Ann and Benjamin twice.

Researching my brother in laws ancestry I have found on familysearch a birth and baptism record for Benjamin Russell born 21 June 1820, baptised 6 November 1821 Saint Martin, Birmingham,  son of Benjamin and Ann Russell.

I'm wondering if anyone has access to parish records and could check if he had any siblings and also if there's any record of his parent's marriage.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Littlehampton does have its own cemetery, run by the local authority so contact with them at Arun District Council might help.
