Lanarkshire / Re: Alexander Hall 1878-1960
« on: Wednesday 26 August 20 21:47 BST (UK)  »
Many thanks for information to date which has been most helpful. I have checked with Scottish People but cannot find the birth for Alexander Watson Hall in 1878. Or that of his father Robert Hall who appears to have been born in 1839.Robert appears to have been alive in 1901 at the date of Alexander's first marriage but again I have found no subsequent record of his death. I had thought that as Robert was a stoker on a ship he could have died at sea. However by 1901 he would have ben 62 years of age and I would assume that he would have retired by then

I am trying to find information on Alexander Hall who was a fireman in Anderston but died in 1960. He was married to Margaret Gourlay in 1901 and later to Janet  (Jessie) McCallum who died in 1963. any information would be greatly appreciated particularly if their place of burial could be found. I have been unable to find details of Margaret's death or any children from this first marriage.

Have no information on James Gordon other than he was the father of Margaret Gordon who married Thomas McKie in 1894. Thomas was sixty-four at the time of his marriage and Margaret was 50. The brides parents were given as James Gordon, Solicitor, (decd) and Mary Gordon Nee Brocklebank (decd)

I am trying to find an obituary or burial place of James Gordon, founder of the firm of Primrose and Gordon, solicitors, Dumfries. I understand that he also served as Provost , He apparently died as did his wife before his daughter Margaret married Thomas McKie in 1894. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

Many thanks for all the invaluable help greatly appreciated. I can confirm that Thomas McKie and Robert McKie are not brothers as I have Thomas's family largely accounted for. Rather surprisingly I found when looking for a will for William McKie(Jnr) that this had been recorded as "McKay"

Thomas McKie's father had a brother John McKie, probably born in Dumfries, who is shown as a merchant in Glasgow and it may be that Robert was his son. Unfortunately I have no further information on this

I wonder if anyone can help me with information on the above. I know that he was born in Dumfries in 1830 and died in Edinburgh in 1908. He was an advocate and I have reason to believe that he was a poet and friend of William Morris. I think that he would be involved in philanthropic works but have not been able to trace these because of the library lockdown. I did find some connection with the Edinburgh Mission but no substantive information. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your reply. I think that William was engaged in the Woollen Industry although I have to date no definite proof. I have also been unable to find out where his daughter Mary died. Although her death is recorded as 5th February 1844 it does no appear to have taken place in Dumfries as it is not in the Scottish People record. any information on this would be most welcome
