Technical Help / Free Photo editing Software
« on: Monday 03 May 21 06:22 BST (UK)  »
I recently had to update my computer to a windows10 from a windows Vista. On the old machine I had a free photo editing software programme, BUT (mental blank time) I cannot remember what it was. It was not Gimp, but it was one recommended by Rootschatters.

If any one can come up with what one it was, I would be very grateful. I have tried out the editing system implicit in Windows 10, but do not find it at all simple, nor what I am looking for.

Yours in hope

Is it possible for the restorers to clean up this photo of the gravestone of my wife's paternal grandparents?

If it  is not possible, I would not be suprised.

Australia / Trying to find if an inquest was held
« on: Sunday 14 March 21 06:31 GMT (UK)  »
My OH's grandmother died 20 July 1958, and was buried 19 Sept 1958.

This would indicate that there was an inquest by the coroner for there to be such a delay before she was buried. Can anyone let me know how to go about finding out if and where an inquest would have been held.

Her name was Annie Huthnance, nee Hamilton, born 11 March 1875 at Murrurundi NSW

At the time of her death, she was living at Pittwater Road Collaroy, her husband having died in 1954.

I have looked at the NSW Archives, but could not work out if there were any records of inquests at that period of time.

Any assistance would be very gratefully accepted.

Can the brilliant restorers sharpen up this photo from 1947 of my wife's family.

Some of the children are still with us, but I believe that the photo being from 1947 does not constitute not posting photos of living people.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Macarthurs 1944

I have a photo of my wife's family, taken in 1944.

Some of those children are still alive, but I have been assured that photos before the 1960's are permissible.

If it is possible, could this photo be sharpened up. It seems as though it was over exposed, but I am not sure.

Armed Forces / Incorrect Military Statements
« on: Sunday 14 February 21 06:05 GMT (UK)  »
I have an interesting problem regarding one of the ancestors, not direct, Frank Chesters.

I have his date of birth in March 1874, and baptism 3 March 1878.

I have a copy of his marriage certificate dated 17 Nov 1895, at Chelsea. I have three children, born 1897, 1907, 1910. The wife’s name is Emily Filby Bannister, not a common name.

When doing some more research, I found a military record signed 15 Apr 1921.
On this he states his date of birth as 8 Jan 1882. He also states that he married 19 Nov 1902, at the same church as the 1895 marriage, with three children, born 1907, 1909 and 1917. The name of the wife is as above, Emily Filby Bannister.

The Army form is B2529 Original. It states that he joined 15 4 21.

He was discharged 15 June 1919 with emphysema and there his date of birth was stated as 1873.
Can anyone point me in the direction he would have made these “incorrect” statements to the military.
I am most confused :'(

Lanarkshire / Seeking help re training of Scottish Presbyterian ministers
« on: Thursday 31 December 20 05:45 GMT (UK)  »
I have an ancestor of OH who became a Presbyterian ministers sometime between 1861 and 1869.
In 1861, he was a Writers clerk, as per the 1861 census. He was aged 18 at the time, living at home, at 224 Garscube Rd Glasgow.

The next reference I have been able to find is from the Glasgow Herald of 20 May 1869, where he is referred to as a probationer, to be called to go to Blackburn, Lancashire.

I have his basic life from there, but am wondering if anyone can point me in the direction  of where to look for the time and place he would have been in training to become a United Presbyterian minister.

His name was Arthur Macarthur, born 1843 in Glasgow, and died in 1920 in Newcastle on Tyne.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Thomas Waterhouse 1841 Census
« on: Monday 16 November 20 04:11 GMT (UK)  »
Could some one with better eyes than me work out what is Thomas Waterhouse’s occupation could be. I see it as Pay Gatherer, but am not at all sure, and also I have not come across such an occupation before.

Also, is it possible to work out the address. It appears to me as Ainsworth S….
G Park. This would be a location in the Blackburn, Lancashire area, possibly Gemshaw park, but not certain.

The census is HO107/Piece502/Book17/Folio33/Page12

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / What is this Occupation?
« on: Sunday 08 November 20 05:12 GMT (UK)  »
I have Charles Pilling in the 1891 Census in Elton, Lancashire, aged 52. As far as I can see, his occupation is "Crofter at Paper Mill".

It is the word which I interpret as crofter that I am having trouble with. I know that the normal meaning of crofter is a small farmer, so just what is the word?

Please help  :'( :'(
