thank you.   yes they had these 6.  Jane died as a baby.  I think Margaret's mother was Jane Leighton, though on hr death record, disappointingly she is called "bell" but I am still going with Jane as I have found this family's history and can find no trace of a Isobel leighton marrying a William Adam.   anyway, that's another thing . . . back to husband James.  Their 2 sons, William and james were at the Gordon's school in Aberdeen.   David had died so only John and Robert were at home.  he also died. John James and William survived and grew to adulthood.  John also became a shoe maker in Aberdeen.

It is registered in Old Machar presumably because that is where he was living at the time  of his marriage, Windmillbrae. sadly this record gives no clue as to his origins either.   He moved into 27 Virginia St in 1827 and next door lived a George Strachan,  maybe this is his brother. . .

ah, I just have the one from Banchory, where Margaret Adm was the school mistress.  I didn't think of looking at the other one.  I didn't realise a marriage could be registered in 2 places and didn't think to look at the other!  here goes . .

thank you all.   I have just looked at the census, and indeed there is a NO in the "this county" column,  I had never thought that he was born from anywhere else other than Aberdeen so thank you for that.  the death/burial comes up on ancestry   at nellfield cemetery 3rd September, family papers have it he died on 28th august. I have his testament.  Wife Margaret was also buried in nellfield  later.   the marriage registers in Banchory and Old Machar is odd.  Banchory was Margaret's parish, but if old Machar was his, he would show up as being  born in "this county" - wouldn't he?

Aberdeenshire / James Strachan shoemaker Aberdeen

I have hit a brick wall as James Strachan is a common name! he was a shoemaker in Virgina st, married Margaret Adam  Banchory 1824. died Aberdeen 1842 aged 46.  I can't find an appropriate birth for him.  are there clues for me in the shoemaker trade?  is he likely to be the son of a shoemaker?  James was Dean of the Guild at one time according to memoirs.

so if I am run over by a bus tomorrow, or even today, no one can change/add to what I have put into the database? a good point and I have no idea what the answer is.   I look forward to some very ingenious answers!
